I agree with you on Deep Rising but this film.I thought I was settling down to get something like Deep Rising but I was horribly sent out. Good acting is the ONLY thing that this film has going for it. The "Alien" isn't even really an alien it's more like a wack version of terminator machines which is neither scary, chilling, mysterious, or any other adjetive I'd like to feel watching these type of movies. It's sad because the movie could have been a thousand times better, easily.
Where have all the good writers gone? -

I can't believe this film has a vote lower than 5. How is that possible? This movie provides for some good entertainment, good action, good acting and an awesome plot. When you put all that together you get blast of a movie, like Virus. Which is why I gave it a 10. This movie is now one of the best horror-action films out there. There is another awesome movie out there this is similar to this one. Deep Rising. That film is another underrated film, but nonetheless one of the greatest monster movies in history, to which I proceeded to hand a score of 10.
Hilarious! It was a solid enough entertainment, although it stretched credibility toward the end. Boy, Hollywood just keeps grinding these things out, like rotted sausage! -

I saw it in the theater when I was like 13 and it was a blast. Storywise it falls just short of awesome, unlike Deep Rising, which was perfect. Virus' creature effects are great though and it's one of the better and more original entries in the monster/action genre. It could've used a stronger ending, but it's still undeniably fun to watch.

The key words in your post is "fun to watch". So as long as you enjoyed the ride you were entertains, as I was when I saw it in the theater. Was it a Blockbuster type movie/ Certainly not, but as long as it entertained it was successful!

If you break down the vote (
http://www.imdb.com/board/10120458/ratings
) it shows it is rated slightly below average by all groups.
Votes Average
Males 10987 4.7
Females 1156 4.7
Aged under 18 26 3.4
Males under 18 23 3.3
Females under 18 3 4.7
Aged 18-29 4128 4.9
Males Aged 18-29 3741 4.9
Females Aged 18-29 387 4.6
Aged 30-44 6179 4.5
Males Aged 30-44 5683 4.5
Females Aged 30-44 496 4.5
Aged 45+ 1703 4.9
Males Aged 45+ 1474 4.9
Females Aged 45+ 229 5.2
IMDb staff 4 4.5
Top 1000 voters 462 4.5
US users 3879 4.5
Non-US users 8264 4.7
IMDb users 16682 4.7
However, a comparison between the 1 & 2 ratings and 9 & 10 show that many more people had a stronger dislike than like; 13.9% vs. 4.6%. Even if you throw out the the bottom 1 & 2 voters and the 9 & 10 it just barely makes an average rating of 5% which is a good indication of overall quality of the film. I guess Jamie was about right on her own review and should have better knowledge of all aspects of the film. It would have been better if she had stated what parts were "sh*t", acting, plot, graphics, directing, etc.
My favorite:

Agreed this is indeed one of the most underrated movies ever. The film has a real creepy vibe through out and I loved it. The alien robot is the stuff of nightmares, and the effort made in its design is obvious. The elaborate designs of the tinier robots are also amazing. It's a shame this film was not given its due.
