After watching it again, I just realize that Dr. Gull was half possessed while become JTR. Every time he goes hunting, the iris color of his eyes become darker and bigger. so, the supernatural things did exist in this movie not just from the protagonist but also the antagonist

I took more as bloodlust kicking in. Drunk on power. Totally focused. Any empathy or compassion just shut down until he has done what he has to do.
