I don't understand how people say the cgi for Godzilla was awful. I watched it on blu ray the other day and they hold up amazingly well. Hell, they are as good as, even better than some of the effects today.
The baby godzilla effects, strangely are a lot lot worse. Perhaps they were done by a different company than the one who did the father Godzilla????

the CGI was remarkable. The movie was among the worst of the worst.
Those seven years of MacGyver finally payed off

What is immature about hating this movie?

How could they do this to the king of monsters?
TOHO did approve of the design for Godzilla, so if it was just for the money or some other reason, THEY DID APPROVE THE "ZILLA" DESIGN, so please stop blaming everything on Tri Star and Tatopolous.
How could they get Roland Emmerich to direct this?
Emmerich was in the heels of the ginormous ID4 and there was no way that the formula (Giant Mutated Lizard, City Destruction, Event Movie, Ronald Emmerich) could not work..
Say what you want about the movie, but Emmerich has a talented eye for depicting amazing disaster scenes that few directors have. The other stuff, well I aint arguing it neither I will claim he can direct a masterpiece, even tho The Patriot, with all its historical inaccuracies is a pretty good movie overall.
Anyways, when Godzilla 1998 was teased at theaters, it had the most amazing look and feel to it.
And the most important question of all: WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE BOTTOM 100?!?!?!
Cause most people, aside from die hard, blind fans of "Godzilla"(in any form of the ridiculous adaptations that came after the 1954 masterpiece), can see the movie for what is was, a product of the 90's that delivered on what it promised. Giant Lizard vs Military mayhem The movie is well shot, had amazing XFX for the time and even tho the pace in the 3rd act was horrible, it was a fun ride to take in a movie theater (not in a laptop with a torrent copy) with an audience. Not the best but not as bad as some fanboys make it seem to be.

My pick for worst Godzilla movie is GODZILLA VS. MEGALON, which almost makes the 1998 movie look like CITIZEN KANE. Almost.

I'll say this. It's definitely the worst acted. Even the French guy, who's a good actor, looks like they gave him the script 5 min before shooting.

I just want to say that this message board is way too filled up with people who hate the movie. It was popular at the time, a lot of people liked it. Personally I think it's one of the best movies of all time. It wasn't trying to add to the Godzilla series (which this movie is far better than anyway). So what if it's reminiscent of Jurassic Park? It still has lots of differences. CGI was still good. In the end it was a good thrill ride of a movie which flowed well, was funny, just had a good combination of everything

Meh, it's a pretty good popcorn flick. When I watch a Godzilla movie, I don't expect multiple layers, character arcs and beep I just want Godzilla beep beep up and that's exactly what we got. I'll have to admit that this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. Atleast, this is way better than the 2014 version where Godzilla doesn't even show up until over an hour into the film. The 2014 film is absolute garbage.

Every board has one of these "Worst Movie Ever" threads. No, this is not the worst movie ever made. Just because you hated it doesnt make it the worst movie ever. Stop being dramatic.

I just finished watching again tonight, this time on cable. It's not that it's really bad, it's just in desperate need of having 45 minutes cut out of it.
The Madison Square Garden scenes just recycled the kitchen scene from JURASSIC PARK. The director's feud with Siskel and Ebert resulted in the annoying scenes with the mayor and his assistant. There was too much dialogue that was unintentionally funny, which is why it got so many Razzie awards.
This is a popcorn movie. It should have been fast paced and run just under an hour and a half. Remember the wise words of Mel Brooks: the maximum length of a movie should be about ninety minutes, because that's the longest any human being can stretch out one box or Raisinettes.

I usually watch Godzilla movies in threes on a Saturday afternoon; yesterday it was Godzilla 98, Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla vs. Mothra 1964. My wife and I enjoyed all three.
At least they bothered with a somewhat original story line in Godzilla 98. I recently watched the latest, Shin Godzilla/Godzilla Resurgence and was honestly bored out of my mind. It looked great, but I felt like I was watching someone else playing a video game.
Apart from the cultural relevance of Godzilla 54, the rest have been entertainments with stories about as ridiculous as most James Bond movies; any excuse to get Godzilla on screen destroying a city or fighting off some other oversized monstrosity. The 1960s Godzilla movies were the most creative.
So, anyone out there who likes this one, even as a guilty pleasure, don't bother with nay-sayers. It's certainly not the best movie out there, but definitely not the worst either. Try watching it again as a popcorn movie and you won't be disappointed.
"Madam, it's the best I could do on such short notice"

It was solid and carefree 1990s action cinema. Definitely better than the remake IMO.
