Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Godzilla

    justahero — 9 years ago(June 23, 2016 10:14 AM)

I was 87 when I first saw it and it was my first english spoken movie with subtitles I saw in cinema.
It is a huge part of my childhood!
The best part of the movie is when Godzilla comes to New York for teh first time imo.
    Plus cast is good
SFX are cool and music is nice
Its not masterpiece its a fun film

Just giving you a bit of guff. All in good fun. We all make gaffs such as that sometimes. I just figure if you were a kid at 87, perhaps you'd live to see 900.
Can't say I'm much a fan of the film though. More than anything I found it boring, and just too far removed from what Godzilla is meant to be, that I couldn't really enjoy it, even in a harmless way. If it were called anything else, I suppose I wouldn't mind it so much. But if you are going to name your film something that already exists, and use existing characters in it, you do bear at least some responsibility to observe the critical elements of the existing work, and the sensitivities of fans of that work. Emmerich and crew clearly did not.
It was so different that they could have called it something else entirely, and I don't think many people would even compare it to Godzilla. He could have, but he didn't. He cashed in on an already existing name while distributing a film of substandard quality. I can't forgive that. I'll never consider this film a 'real' Godzilla movie. I think most Godzilla fans would agree.
All that said, there is nothing wrong with enjoying this film.

I know but you never know here 😄 😄 😄
Just thinking about this film I remember, like I said my first english spoken film with subtitles, on a big screen, I was 8 in love with Jurassic Park.
I was WOWed by this film 😄 it was so much fun for me as a kid. And today I just view it as mindless fun 🙂
But I still love when Godzilla first enters New York I think that sequence is pretty brilliant.
You see all this mayhem. And the only thing you see of Godzilla are his legs and tail 😄
And another thing is it was the first time I learned about Godzilla. I didnt know there is a HUGE history to this monster and complete genre on its ownI found out about that years ago as I started to be interested about movies.
I enjoyed the new american one toothey could skip the human stuff though 😄
But in 3D on my but TV it was coolBut Pacific Rm was more fun imo 😄
I love Guillermo del Toro you know 🙂
And Pacific Rim was very lighthearted fun film

I very much enjoyed Pacific Rim as well. I think they are doing a sequel, which I would look forward to.
If you do look into the earlier Godzilla films, be warned, you will run into some VERY strange films. There have been over 30 of them now. I've seen perhaps 15 or so. Some of the earlier ones from the 60's and 70's were REALLY weird. Fun and campy in there way, but some were just plain bad. I know I said that I'll never consider the 1998 Godzilla a 'real' Godzilla movie, but at the same time there are some 'real' Godzilla films, that were even worse as far as quality and enjoyability are concerned.
Godzilla, in general, is a very strange cultural phenomenon.

Don't worry. You're not the only one. If anything though you ought to check out the original Japanese version of 'Gojira' from 1954. Can't say for sure you'd enjoy it, but it definitely has more heart, and more purpose, than any Godzilla work that's been done since.
