No, the O.P. doesn't have issues. This is actually a very interesting topic, especially since it doesn't seem to have been brought up before. I'd like to know myself how often that actually happens for a dog to just suddenly turn on one of its own owners like that for no reason. Is that "normal" behavior for a dog, or is that just something that happens in movies? It seems to be a common occurrence in films that Stephen King is associated with.

With the lawyer being wrong about everything else, it would seem strange that people would believe him about dogs.
Isn't a dog breeders forum a better place to discuss dog behaviour?
But as seen as we are here, I'll dip my oar. Personally I think that people get it wrong. Like a 6 year old child who gets her arm lacerated horribly by a terrier (I have seen with my own eyes). She didn't read the dogs silent language and it went for her. Family protest this and back the dog like a family member.
From the kid's point of view they weren't to know and shouldn't be expected to read dog behaviour visiting a friend who has a dog.
So yes everybody is right. To the untrained eye, dogs turn and hurt people as per the Lawers speech. In reality we if we were all dog trainers we would read the signs and be warned of an attack.
People can't be expected to read dog behaviour and have a right to be safe. -

I think you're looking at it too one dimensionally. The
lawyer
says the dog
just got it into it's head
. The average dog owner doesn't know squat about animal welfare or temperament. I volunteer for an animal rescue centre and a dog, or any animal including a human, can attack if it's ill, injured unknown to it's owner or the kid could even have been terrorising the dog. I wouldn't get too upset about a situation that was contrived for dramatic purposes.
I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking! -

Oh I'm not upset about it. But I just wanted to point out that dogs or any other being for that matter will not attack with no provocation. There are always signs.
I agree that most people do not understand dog behavior and to them it may seem unprovoked or that they just got it into their head. That's always the sad part. The dog gets the beep end of the stick because the people are idiots and don't understand or they just let their moron kids terrorize the dog and don't teach them how to treat animals. -

The thing is there were and still are plenty of people who believe that about dogs and people. That was the complete point here. This lawyer was a very backwards person and not at all the person to try to defend John Coffey. He never planned on giving him a proper defense because in the lawyer's mind Coffey was just a dog that went over. Paul recognized this and knew it was futility to try to engage the legal system to try to help Coffey.

I disagree. We CAN communicate with animals. It's a matter of understanding the animal you are dealing with. They all have their instincts and their own language. We as humans have to learn their specific behaviors before we try to handle them. There are ALWAYS signs when an animal is feeling distressed, annoyed, timid, upset, happy, whatever. I have worked with all types of animals (domesticated and wild) and I know this to be true.
Also, comparing TIGERS to DOGS is not fair. Dogs have been domesticated and bred to be with people. Dogs, when raised kindly/gently and properly trained/socialized, are wonderful pets. You can bring your dog in the house and let your guard down, play with them outside or feed them and not ever have to worry about them mauling or killing you. Tigers are, on the other hand, no matter how much you care for them are wild animals and the utmost caution and respect should be used when dealing with them.
But anyway.. this lawyer, is obviously, an ignorant dumb backward person. He blamed the dog for what happened. I will NEVER believe that it's the dogs fault when these things happen. There is a saying that goes like this it's not the dog it's the owner!

It doesn't change the fact that if it was my child that got savaged by an unprovoked dog (yes it happens all the time) regardless of whether it was the dogs fault or not, that dog would be off to the next life.

I can certainly understand what you are saying. I think everyone feels like that if someone or some animal were to hurt a member of our family.. We want to strike back at them and hurt them. Eye for an eye. But, there are always reasons why an animal/person would attack or hurt someone and there are always warning signs that it could/is going to happen. I do not believe in unprovoked attacks. If you look deep enough you'll find the reason.

Although a dog usually has some sort of provocation for attacking, it's not an absolute. When I was a kid, one of my friends had a dog that, on more than one occasion, tried to bite people who had done nothing to it. I can only figure that it was mentally imbalanced.
