Kinda confused about what John did to Percy.

nah i see it differently i don't think percy is necessarily an evil person he was simply a prick. when John breathed the diseased energy in him i believe what happened is he sent all the information of what billy the kid did to those girls into percy notice when he looks at billy a tear runs down his cheek. i think he saw what billy did and it drove him to kill billy as a way to punish him. but also cracked percy's mind

In the book, John is almost like an idiot-savant.
From Wiki: The most dramatic examples of savant syndrome occur in individuals who score very low on IQ tests, while demonstrating exceptional skills or brilliance in specific areas, such as rapid calculation, art, memory, or musical ability.
In the book, John couldn't read, couldn't tie his own shoe, and seemed to have very little intelligence. He didn't remember what had happened with the little girls until he touched Wild Bill and "read" it from him.
There seems to be a force that flows through him, letting him "hear" what's going on inside the people around him (without really understanding it), know who is hurting, how to help.
John seems to be almost pure empathy, with very little intellect.
I highly doubt he had the intelligence to plan to take the illness from the woman, hold it inside himself (at considerable pain to himself), and give it to Percy. It's more like he was led to do it by the force that flowed through him and used him. -

Hmm, interesting idea. I have not seen anyone else on this board explain it quite that way yet. It certainly seems to make more sense to me than what initially seems apparent to most viewers (including myself), that John consciously decided to put the "bugs" into Percy. I like your explanation better.

This reminds me of my ex.
He wasn't the most intelligent guy out there. He was very ignorant of the world, and just overall naive and childish at heart. He probably had an IQ as low as 80 (which isn't terribly bad, but disquieting). Despite this, he was an expert when it came to problem solving, electronics (phones, stereos) and the likes. Heck, he even finished high school, whereas I dropped out.
Interesting how such a term exists (I've always pondered on people with his "condition"). I didn't know about it until now. Thanks.

I also wondered, if John was illiterate, how he knew that his last name and "coffee" aren't spelled the same. Was he just parroting something he'd heard?
Also, how come the Green Milers didn't have to wear prison uniforms?

Giving it to Wharton would probably have achieved nothing. He was a complete psychopath who embraced the horror of everything he did on a level far above anything Percy had done. He raped two little girls, bashed their heads in and showed no absolutely no remorse. You couldn't teach the guy anything.
Percy was a sociopath, a coward and a boot licker who justified everything he did by claiming it was because he was dealing with "bad people" and I thought that John made him see a completely unedited version of what Wharton did to the Detterick twins (he simply showed Paul enough to let him know who was truly responsible for the girls' death as he liked Paul and saw that he was a good man) as well as feeling their suffering as punishment for what Percy did to Del.
Percy becoming a catatonic was an unintended consequence of this, I think. I found it interesting, without getting far into horrific details, that Percy's eyes widened and a tear rolled down his face when Wharton said "you wanna suck my dick?" if he was truly seeing and feeling what happened to the girls.
I think it was also meant to be ironic that Wharton (who felt no remorse for his crimes) had a fairly quick and easy death whereas Del (who did feel remorse) suffered a long, drawn-out, torturous death. Also, that Percy finally saw what true sadism was and what the one prisoner he was genuinely afraid of (as opposed to the one he tortured to death) truly was. -

In the book Percy coughs up the "bad stuff" after shooting Bill. Not sure why they took that out of the film.
And also the book features much more heavily on how the "Percy" type people of the world will never reform, and will constantly go on to do horrible things to people over and over again. It makes the reader feel more justified in Coffey turning Percy catatonic.
