Coffey was too pure for this world and the positive is, he was set free from his own pain and suffering in a hateful world.
Regarding his circumstance, how could it possibly be proven that he was innocent, especially considering the supernatural healing power surrounding him? The guy was doomed to die and there was no way out of it. He at least got some resolution owed to him regarding Wild Bill and Percy.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

I've never seen it because I was once sat behind two girls on the bus and one of them had just watched it and was telling her friend all about it and it sounded so sad and awful I could never bring myself to watch

Oh, you must view it at least once. Like Lilith said, she probably wouldn't watch it again due to its high end emotional impact, but it sure is one complete and whole experience as a film. I don't have issue watching it though.
It is currently streaming on Netflix if you subscribe.

You must man up and take the suffering along with Coffey. It is both sad and uplifting at the same time.

There are overall 4 executions depicted in the film, one showcases the cruelty of one character, one is an unconventional execution.
