    Back in the 1930s, the Deep South was notorious for lynching black men accused of murdering whites. If the victims were white women who'd been raped, the hatred must've been white hot. I realize a lynching would've brought the story to an abrupt end but the writers should've made some explanation. Even a brief mention could have made things plausible.

      Because there was a sheriff present.
      While blacks too often suffered unfairly under the law in the 30s, particularly in the south, it's unfair (and even racist) to think a white sheriff would not have hung what appeared to be a clearly guilty black man.
      If it was a posse with no constabulary present, it's possible that a hanging might have occurred.
