Where did their mother fit in?

I think the aunts were probably great aunts to Sally and Gillian. Their mother seemed to have been the redhead of the sister pair, so maybe she had a brunette sister who for some reason couldn't take Sally and Gillian as kids or maybe she had died.
The aunts are a brunette and redhead pair, so I'm kinda wondering how Sally and Gillian are their nieces, even if they are great aunts. If Frances and Jet are the girls's mother Regina's aunts, that would mean that they had another sister who gave birth to Regina. Unless they are just a bit further out relations but are just referred to as aunts given their ages e.g. I have a second cousin who we call aunt because it is simpler than explaining how second cousins work to younger children.
The aunts could be second cousins to Sally and Gillian, given that we have been shown that Owens line always has two girls - a brunette and redhead - and no other siblings.

I took it as that she was a third sister. Even if she was a neice, then she would have been the daughter of a third sister of the aunts which indicates they can have more than 2 girls if they chose to. Frankly, I dont think that each generation had to have two kids. There was no mention of it.

It seems like I remember the book mentioning Jett and Fran having a third sister who may have been Sally and Jilly's mom. But watching the movie gave me the impression that the girls' mom was the niece of Jett and Fran. It is not really made clear but I don't think every generation had only 2 girls- that was just coincidence that Sally and Jilly resembled Sally's girls.
