OR maybe the aunts weren't sisters at all. I've watched the movie several times and I've noticed that there is no reference in the script that they are sisters. They could have been lovers which is very common in modern Wicca. I'm a guy but there is something very comforting in believing their bond is by choice instead of by blood but I could be very wrong. Whatever the case, they are wonderful characters played by wonderful actresses two of my favorites.

That may be the case. If anything, the dark-haired sister is an Owen due to the fact that early in the books she mentioned that her male lover, Ethan had died. I remember her saying "What about my poor Ethan?"
"It was an accident."
"No, it was fate." -

Yay, let's bring Wicca into it That's always a fun idea when discussing a witch movie. All those modern Wiccans coming out to declare that they are a persecuted minority, their religion being slandered and mocked, perpetuated by stereotypes Blah blah blah

I don't think the aunts were even the mothers aunts. I think they were even older. and I always thought they were sisters or cousins. and I think sally and gillians mom was the redhead(I think) and the actress looked a lot like nicole kidman which I thought was cool? I think there is always one redhead and one brunette. maybe her sister died, considering the curse she could have codeword died from a broken heart as well

Well remember their early ancestor was by herself and she had one child (not two) so later it just happens that there were two (one redhead and one brunette). And like they said The mother may have had a sister who died.
Also the aunts were older than we realized I think so who knows how far back they go in generations, they are witches after all -

I think it just so happened to be two girls. Although I dont think the movie screwed it up. Sally does say that the women are their aunts so it seems their mother was their sister. Even if she was a niece then that still means that their mother was a descendant of a third Owens sibling or sister, which indicates they can have more than 2 kids if they chose to have more. Chances are, how many kids they had depended on when their husbands/lovers died. Plus the Owen women didnt seem to have many kids because their loved lives and partners were typically cursed. Another thing, Gillian even said in the movie that if God didnt let her boyfriend die then she'd have kids, which indicates that kids are an option for her as well.
