Another good one:
Sniper starring Jude Law and Ed Harris.
It fell under the radar because it's the battle of StalingradRussians vs Germans. This movie made me realize that sniping is more than sitting in a tree and picking off enemy soldiers. -

- Saving Private Ryan
- White Tiger / (Russian)
- Full Metal Jacket
- 9th Company (Russian)
- Downfall
I was impressed by the quality of both Russian movies above. Definitely a must-see, even with subtitles, I've watched both, like 3 times each.

If you liked the two Russian films, I also recommend you see "Fortress Of War":

And "Come And See":

Trust me. I know what I'm doing. -

- Saving Private Ryan
- Das Boot
- The Cruel Sea
- Apocalypse Now
- The Longest Day
The Deer Hunter is NOT a war movie
Neither is Schindler's List
A "War Movie" is not just a movie set during a period of wartime, it is about the war itself. It doesn't have to have combat scenes but it does have to follow military events (true or fictional) during the conflict.
The Pianist, The Gray Zone, Kapo, Schindler's List are all excellent movies that touch on the Holocaust - but they are NOT war movies.

I just started perusing this list and found a list I particularly agreed with. Amazing that someone thought the same as me about great films. Turns out it was me!
Well it was last November that I posted it and I am getting old! -

Not in any order
- Saving Private Ryan
- Tae Guk Gi (Korean War)
- 9th Company (Russians in Afghanistan)
- Black Hawk Down
- We Were Soldiers
Honorable mentions to - Letters from Iwo Jima (the Japanese version; very very good and interesting to see the perspective of two Japanese soldiers who want to die gloriously in suicide charge and one who thinks their lives are more important than some national duty they were forced to bear arms for)
- Full Metal Jacket (this is actually my favorite #1).
