Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Saving Private Ryan

The scene where they stop at the camp and two of the guys start looking at the deceased's dog tags always bugged me. For one, it really bothered me how they grabbed a handful, looked at them and then threw them back into the box which they were still checking. That was such a stupid thing to do.
But the main reason that scene bugged me was how Tom Hanks insisted that Ryan's dog tags wouldn't be in there and they should keep going without even checking them all. He was in charge of the mission, and those boy's lives; he would not just do something so reckless based on nothing but a hunch. I realize that Tom Hanks really wanted to believe that Ryan was still alive but he wouldn't just not check the tags in the box.

It was, which is why Edward Burns' character chastised Jackson for doing it.

Miller was unraveling at this point, as we see again in the following scene when he decides to take on the machine gun nest even when everyone tells him it's a bad idea.

Uhhh, after he threw back the dog-tags, they found the guy who knew Ryan (the one who couldn't hear very well) and they headed off to find Ryan. That's when the were in the field and the German armored vehicle showed up and they met Ryan.

You're confused. They go after the machine gun nest right after the dog tag/deaf guy scene. It's after that when they're in the field and meet Ryan.

Maybe. I'll keep an eye out for the movie and I'll check it out.
