to voice her concerns there about the state of affairs at Naboo, so she could press for a new Chancellor, which would be Palpatine, then why did Palpatine also send Darth Maul to hunt for her to get her to Naboo to sign that stupid treaty?
- What does Palpatine care about a treaty with Naboo anyway?
- What if Darth Maul had actually succeeded in capturing her at Tatooine? Then she would have been brought back to Naboo and Palpatine would have sabotaged his own scheme to depose of the Chancellor?

He initially wanted the Queen to be forced to sign the treaty. He was going to present the information about the invasion and through the sympathy factor coupled with the inaction of the chancellor, he would be nominated once Valorum is ousted. He had no intention on her making it to the Capital and with her showing up, hehad to improvise.

Yeah, the treaty aspect made absolutely no sense. I can only assume that perhaps he wanted to appear desperate for the treaty in order to keep the jig up. But I do not believe the Star Wars prequel have that much depth.

Yeah, maybe. I get why they wrote it in from a story-perspective: it gives them a reason too escape the planet, creates some tension with her being hunted on, gives an explanation for them ending up on Tatooine. But a little more logic or explanation of why this signing of a treaty is so important would have been nice. Or they could have come up with another thing they needed from Amidala. A secret code or something, or an ancient artifact. Something they need to take control of the planet.

Actually, it would have expanded the conflict. As Senator Palpatine, he would have presented the treaty as evidence of the abuse on Naboo, especially if Padme had been executed right after signing it (as she certainly would have been.) He then would present the conflict as proof of Valorum's ineffectiveness, entered a vote of no confidence, and got himself elected on a sympathy vote.
Time to make up a new signature. -

And what he had to "improvise" actually makes more sense than his original plan. What evidence of the invasion was he going to present when there's a communications blackout on Naboo, and the first thing the Senate would find out is that there's now a legally binding treaty (at first glance) that's been signed by Naboo's head of state? How long would it take to oust Valorum via this series of events? What if the treaty is taken to court? How long does that take, especially since Palatine would be a Senator fighting against the new rulers of his planet?
Fact is, allowing either Padme or even just the Jedi to make it back so they can provide evidence is far more logical and a safer bet to help oust Valorum. But no, George didn't really think about that. He just thought about what would result in enough action scenes. And now we have blind fanboys attempting to justify the plan. How sad. -

I don't think the plan hinged on the treaty being signed, only to show that Chancellor Valorum had no power and was ineffectual, so he could be removed from office. Valorum had the support of Naboo up till this point, so removing him was always going to be difficult. It's only when Amidala sees he's powerless that she moves for him to be removed due to no confidence in his ability to resolve their issue (attack on their sovereignty). I'd imagine if the treaty had been signed, then Valorum would NOT have been able to censure the trade federation into returning power back to the Naboos and they would have wanted new leadership (probably would have been Alderaan that requested it on behalf of Naboo) at which point Palpatine could have stepped in to force the TF to back down (or had Sidious force them to obey)

Palpatine most likely had multiple routes to his end goal.
His overall plan was:- Get elected as Chancellor
- Escalate conflict and get people worried
- Get the Army of the Republic approved
- Crush the Separatist groups
- Use emergency powers to establish Empire
The most important elements were finding a way for him to take the Chancellor role, and to escalate the conflict with the Separatists to convince the Republic to take more drastic steps that they wouldnt recover from. Everything that happened with the Naboo conflict was only there to increase his chances of succeeding Valorum.

Indeed! Palpatine's desire to have the treaty signed drives the events of the entire movie, yet there's no apparent reason why he (or the audience, for that matter) should care about it, .
Same for what the Trade Federation hopes to gain from any of this. Naboo has something to do with the taxation of trade routes? It's never explained what.
Lazy writing by Lucas.
