Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Caught the last half an hour of this film today and it's the first time I've watched that much of it for a long while. It really is awful.
Natalie Portman's delivery is so flat and she looks uncomfortable delivering it, like she's constipated.
The CGI has dated very badly. Not even the clouds look realistic. Everything is so clean and cartoony.
The dialogue is hideous. How many times can the boy keep going "Oops"? "Yeah I've just turned on this spaceship I'm in and it's taking me into a space battle where I might die. Ooops!" Just absurd.
Jar Jar Binks is what he is; the single worst written character that's ever been anywhere near a respectable and much loved film franchise.
The only half decent thing in it is Darth Maul, his fight scene, and the music that plays while it takes place. Everything else is kid-happy tosh.
Having watched the recent Rogue One edition of the Star Wars franchise, it makes this look like a rotting piece of Lucas faeces that has been lingering in a toilet that can't flush for 18 years.

Yeah, and who puts main reactor cores in a capital ship's hangar bay? The bumbling Trade Federation, that's who.

It's clear real film making is not for you. Stick to Marvel, Disney and Michael Bay. Hand the corporations your money just like they surveyed you would.

Even Darth Maul's fight scene is intercut with that awful slapstick battle between the two armies

The worst thing is that some people are trying to re-write history and re-evaluate this dumb movie.
It will not work : give up.
              History has spoken.
