    I feel
as though there's a few movies that no matter how many times you watch them, there is always a small detail or two that you don't quite understand . for me this movie has one of them . Towards the end of the film, just After Estes takes Julie and her friends to see the gravestones, he disappears and then Will finds him about to leave with a boat. Estes then attacks him. Why does he do this ? Didn't he say he was trying to protect them with Voo Doo? and then he goes off and does that. I don't think it's ever explained why he randomly hits Will. So can anyone explain this to me ?

I always figured he realized that Will was the killer's son.

Me too. I reckon he saw it in the entrails or whatever voodoo practitioners use for that sort of thing.

The tone of his voice suggests that he knew all along the Will was Ben's son, on repeat viewings it doesn't work but the first time round it's just to paint a red herring. Earlier on in the film Estes looks funny at Will, it's more noticeable the second time round. It makes you wonder if he would have gone for help or not, at some point after hitting Will he ends up with the fishing pole rammed through him I wonder who did it Will or Ben.

Well considering ben probably worked there when he was Wills age he probably thought he looked like someone he knew. Then when he found the bodies he realized why he looked familiar. Or so it would seem to me lol.

Perhaps Estes was a witch doctor? Who doubled as a bell hop/porter and he knew that way? Remember when he stole personal objects (toothbrush, hair tie) from the guests? However he didn't steal anything (that we saw) from Will.
                Any of that make
                any
                sense whatsoever?

Earlier in the movie when they were going to their rooms in the hotel Estes says to Will "I've been doing this before your daddy (can't remember the whole line but it was a hint that Will is Ben's son).

I've been doing this since you were a glimmer (?) in your daddy's eye (I think)
Could have been glint in your daddy's eye

Estes knew all along through voodoo that Will was Ben's son. As another poster mentioned, as Will and Tyrell are walking in the rain, about to discover the corpse of Titus, Will spots Estes looking at him through the window. Estes wanted to save Julie, Karla and Tyrell, but had done all he could really. I think Estes was going to take the boat and find help. Once Will found him, Estes attacked Will with the oar. Will recovered, albeit still dazed, took Estes down and eventually shot him through the back with the harpoon.
Ben took control from there, using Estes' corpse to restrain Nancy in the resort and scare the other survivors even more. That's my take on it.

he recognized Will as the little boy of Ben. and knew he was the killer so he was trying to lead him that way to hopefully get him away from the others, and he attacked him. but obviously it wasn't enough. we don't see if he killed estes or not but he prob did
