and others as morpheus. I dont think it would've worked.
The Matrix seems white washed and it works that way somehow.

Agreed.
I don't think the film would've looked as good.
Image was a big part of this film and Keanu has the look for it.
Something about that pale skin with black hair, black sunglasses and outfits that looks cool. Plus he matches Trinity much better. They just look like they'd be together IRL.
Will Smith would have looked goofy with those big ears sticking out but he had the right look for movies like Independence Day, Bad Boys etc..

He had black shades in MIB.
I dont think that look that came out was the intentional look for the movie. Keanu wasnt on the tops list.
I think they saw him as his career going down.
Most of the movie is white with black undertones.

Will Smith could have been okay but it would have been a very different movie.
Will has energy and charisma. Neo is really supposed to be a beat down and uncomfortable person, then he learns why. Somehow he always knew he was in the Matrix but couldn't put his finger on it.
He's a very innocent type of person.
Will Smith would not have played him that way and it would have been weird if he tried. -

^This exactly. Keanu's uncomfortableness worked perfectly well for the character.
Will would have done a good job but it would have lightened the mood and changed the vibe…for the worse IMO.
The movie is supposed to be dark.
Interestingly enough both of these actors have played comical characters as well but Keanu is Neo.

Will would have seemed determined and sarcastic whereas Keanu seemed like a confused victim.
Being a confused victim was more dramatic. Neo never seemed angry or anything just like a dealing with what he had too, etc.
Keanu was perfect for the part.
I'm a huge Will Smith fan too but he isn't right for everything.
As a kid I loved the show Wild Wild West and Will Smith ruined the movie version of that super cool show. -

I LOVED Hancock, but just the first part of it.
I thought it was a great story about depressed black guys, as a theme, and then it turned into the weird and dumb romance story.
I wish there would have been a sequel. -

I did love the first part but I also did like the second part because I think there was a lot of sexual tension and chemistry. They went together and looked good together though I'm usually against blacks and whites. What I didnt like about it was the ending.
Yea me too. They all do yet they have never made it. If anything I really hated about this film was being so invested in it and yet being so let down.

I think Will Smith is one of those limited actors who plays the same character in every film. And that's not to say he doesn't do justice to those roles. If a film needs a hero with his narrow range, he does fine.
As for Keanu Reeves as Neo, Reeves is the same type of limited actor as Smith. But Smith has cockiness which would have conflicted with Neo's hubris.

It sounds like you havent seen much of both actors. I can vouche for both actors have good acting range but most people think this because they are known for big budget roles.
Will Smith was different in Seven Pounds, I robot, Enemy of the State.
For Keanu it's far easier, Point of No Return, Speed, Devil's Advocate, The Watcher, Sweet November, Somethings gotta give, My Own Private Idaho.

He was vastly different in the Watcher, and a little in Something's gotta give.
People might not agree but I found him very different in John Wick and he's done some weird martial arts recently that might not be his forte' but I havent seen them though.
On Will Smith I can understand but did you at least try Enemy of the State? I forgot to mention Concussion which is similar to Seven Pounds. I dont really like Seven Pounds but it was a different range for him and the movie is not bad. I think one of his greatest is Bad Boys the first one but you might say that falls under typical Will Smith but I still feel it stands a bit from his other ones. He has ID4( Independence Day) as well but he isnt such a big part of that one. I forgot about I am legend as well.

Well I definitely think the original Asimov story was butchered in the movie.
And I haven't seen all those films. But with your recommend I'll definitely give him another look. You make a great case.

I might not think so. I think the movie was well made. If anything it might've elevated his work. I think it's one of the better sci-fi films without a doubt.
Yea those are all good and you might see a different range. If I or you dont like them the films are great nonetheless and he is too. Even if you dont like him in it you can see the range and that he plays them well.

That's what's fun about him.
However, it's only fun if it's fun to you.
He's like a "movie star" like say "Jack Nicolson" in that he's just being himself in movies and if you like that, you will love him. If not you won't. -

Fair enough. But it's still Fresh Prince all grown up.
I'm an Issac Asimov fan. I didn't think Smith was the nest choice for that role. Again, Fresh Prince and Asimov don't work together.
