Why did he never open it? I mean he opened all the others and made use of the items retrieved, but stayed clear of this one particular package. i must say his ability to not allow his curiosity win is impressive. Four years and still untouched.

          That puzzled me too.
I think it's a plot device. Gives him the pretext for what happens at the end. Small and forgivable weakness in a tremendous movie.

Some people (like you) are cluelessIt wasn't a "plot device" in the way you suppose, that is, to have it as a pretext for the end.what I mean is they didn't just use the package as a way for him to meet the woman in the end. It was deeper than that:
It had given him a purpose while being desertednamely, he used it as something he believed would get back to its owner one day (i.e.; would be returned to civilization and to the rightful person.just as he wished he would one day return) and in a way he was using it as a connection or bridge to the future with himself. That's also why he never opened it. It was in no way a "weakness" but a main driving point in the film.one you apparently missed in spades.

I can see what you're saying and it makes sense. It was so disappointing to think of this film as having a contrived ending. It didn't seem that way to me when I first saw it years ago, only on repeat viewing recently, and now the thing with the package makes sense again.
However I resent you calling me clueless. There's plenty of room to make your point without resorting to name-calling.

I conclude you dont understand much about human nature. Humans cling to certain things to overcome great losses. Why do you think most old people are tied to there memories? That doesn't exactly answer to your question, because in that particular case he wasn't attached to that box because of a great loss, because that box was not a memory or something he is attached to, that box had a different meaning. I will give your a example quoting a Tarantino masterpiece
                Kill Bill
                :
The biggest enemy of an old man is retirement.
Why do you think that is? When they are not attached to something: a work to do, a routine basically, they start dying. Some old people have chickens that they have to feed everyday, someway those chickens are attached to the old man/women, because they will starve to dead if they don't give them food. That box was the same thing, represents a object that he decided to allow himself to be attached to, in order to have a sense of continuation, a hope. That is very common and his the human nature, when you don't have a reason to continue you start wondering what you are doing in this planet, that's why hope is the felling that can give you more straight in order to continue your journey.

I think the wings on the box gave him the idea for sails if he was ever able to get out of there and that was as good use as any of the other packages gave him, so for some reason he decided not to open this one.

It did often feel like an advertisement. Still a good movie with some flaws.

The house he delivered it too at the end looked to be in the middle of nowhere, just imagine if it WAS something useful for people living in isolation, like seeds or something? He could have been having tomatoes with his fish for 4 years!!
