Which one did you like better? I think, I'd go with Cast Away, even if the Martian has the better setting. There is more emotion in Cast Away. Or just read Robinson Crusoe!

Cast Away is one of the most moving and meaningful movies I've ever seen. I saw it in 2000, when I was 16, and every couple years when I revisit it at a new stage in life, I find different things to appreciate.
The Martin was utter Hollywood pap. There's no comparison. All the stuff back on earth was gag-inducing. Matt Damon's character kept cool the whole time, he barely even had any conflict, just one brilliant solution after another, he didn't even break a sweat. And there was literally nothing to his character.
Cast Away was clearly made from a place of love and passion and is meant as a metaphor for life and the struggles/hardships of the individual. The Martin was made to sell tickets. -

Although I see the simliarities, I don't think it's fair to compare.
However, for me Cast Away is definitely better. I love the Martian, but the heart and soul, the acting and of course for me Tom Hanks makes Cast Away superior. -

The Martian. Scary was the fact that Watley could ONLY be saved by NASA. No remote chance that a wanderer was going to sail by and find him. And there was no way he could manufacture a space shuttle to get himself back.
