Calling it a switch is an oversimplification. It's more of a fracture. The Democrats used to be a big tent party with big government types, urban centers, academics, union members, and southern racists.
After the civil rights acts the southern racists started abandoning the party over time. Then union members fell off once the country started gutting union rights.
