Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jurassic Park III

If you step back and look at it JP3 is basically a slasher movie, except instead of a masked killer there are dinosaurs spilling people's blood. Although many people hated JP3, I'm here to outline some of the reasons that it is my favorite film in the serious.
    The set-pieces
: This movie had some great set pieces. Most people don't know that a lot of that jungle wasn't a real jungle, it was a set that they build on a soundstage. There's also very distinct sequences that are not only really cool, but diverse. You got the airplane scene, the abandoned InGen lab, the pterosaur cage, and the river. All of these made for great grounds for dinosaur action without going too over-the-top.
    The Spinosaurus
: I love theropods and while many people were butthurt about the T-Rex getting killed, I enjoyed the battle scene and thought it was a great way to introduce the new "king of the jungle" for this film. The Spino was terrifying and the mix of CGI and animatronic made it even better.
    The effects
: The first three JP films all have great practical effects, but the raptors in JP3 looked especially good. Something that took me "out of the moment" in Jurassic World, was the blatant overuse of CGI.
    The story
: It's a self-contained story on an abandoned island with only a few people, made it feel even more claustrophobic and horror-likeand I'm a sucker for horror!

Couldn't agree more and since I'm a huge horror buff, it's one of the many reasons I won't skip out on JP3 during my Jurassic Marathons!
I agree with all your points above, and find the action sequences to be really well done, especially the airplane crash. I love the return of Grant and Sadler, and I really enjoy how we get two sequels, one that gives us what Ian did, and the other on what Grant did, after the events of JP.
Man, just reading your post, I feel the need to watch JP3 again!

I just watched the first three in theaters, and I saw 4 last year. 3 has been the most enjoyable one by far, and I agree it is more horror based. I also like that dinosaur fight, that was nice. 90 minute running time really helps as well, I get bored with the scenes of awe regarding the dinosaurs.
Funny thing is, when the III appears on screen as slashes from a claw, my first thought was that it looks like a Freddy movie, and told my girlfriend that Jurassic Park is now a slasher series. Oddly enough, I was right!
