I think its easily possible, many types of birds can fly for more than a day non stop without much effort if the wind is right, i'd imagine that a pterodactyl could fly for longer than most birds alive today.
Then if you also think about the Galpagos Islands and how they're more like 550 miles(i think) away from the nearest coast in South America and birds managed to get there.
Even Spiders have managed to get to the Galpagos Islands by shooting their web in the air and letting the wind carry them. The wind has managed to carry them 500 miles to the island. Obviously its crazy unlikely but it's just an example to show how important wind is and how it could carry birds to the island and back if its going the right way and if theres an updraft.
They should have definitely been worried.

They needed to stay around the lysine rich islands?

"i really don't think a tiny flock of pterodactyls (if that's what they were) would cause a large problem for the world."
Exactly Caligula! The whole scene was juxtaposed with the arrival of the military on the island. You were expected to think that if any future problems were to occur, the military, rather than unarmed civilians would be on hand to deal with them.

Yeah I thought Dr. Grant's reaction in particular was pretty weird, considering he understood as well as anyone else the grave implications of it. It was pretty inconsistent of him, after all his admonishments of people who wanted to go anywhere near dinosaurs.

Yes, but as already stated it was not their task to stop them from nesting. They are just five regular individuals, what can they possibly do?
That's what the military is there for!

I always thought it was a nod to the original, which also sees them flying at the end. In reality those birds could create some serious havoc. Think about it, it is a sunny Sunday afternoon and you see these giant birds thought to be extinct attacking everyone on the street. Unless someone had a shotgun on hand, those things are going to do damage before the cops or the army get there to terminate them.

The original was just plain old regular birds - not dinosaur birds. It was a nod to the belief that dinosaurs evolved into modern day birds.

Why are people saying 'what could they have done?' Well obv they couldn't do anything at the time but they shouldn't just not give a beep Its a big problem.

Exactly! And that more than anything is what bothered me about the ending to this. They could have at least tried to look a little more concerned than they did.

I suppose them alerting the military or authorities that a flock of Pterodactyls have escaped the island is too much for people to comprehend

mere hours ago they were almost killed by them, and in the chopper Grant is like: "they made it out the island, good for them"
come on. the army should be shooting at those things

But try telling it to the army: "There are pterodactyls flying around. Could you please do something about it"?
The army would likely just ignore them as mad-men or something. It is hard to believe to quite frankly. So it wouldn't do anything.
Also it doesn't mean that the pterodactyls would come so far. maybe they just fly around the island and back?

Why would they think they were mad? The army knew about the dinos on the island.

                                        First movie:
The lysine contingency is intended to prevent the spread of the animals in case they ever get off the island. Dr. Wu inserted a gene that makes a single faulty enzyme in protein metabolism. The animals can't manufacture the amino acid lysine. Unless they're continually supplied with lysine by us, they'll slip into a coma and die.

I just finished watching and was thinking the same thing. I don't know if it was lazy writing, or if it will at least be addressed in the new one. I would certainly hope that they'll at least address why the place is now a park, with hundreds of visitors, why this was allowed and why anyone would actually go there on purpose!
