yeah this movie was pretty cliche'd and predictable the worst part was after we were done watching it, my mother said that this movie "confirmed her religious beliefs." things like that just blow me mind; i dont know which part of that statement to correct first, and my brain just gets an overload. god, i hate religion.

no, its useful, its just that the use is stupid to comfort the weak minds of people who would rather dream up easy answers like god than confront the nature of reality.

I read somewhere that religion was created so the poor wouldnt rebel and kill the rich.. meaning enduring a life of struggle sacrifice and pain gets u to heaven where all the good things are.
All I know is religion is like communism.. great in theory but when people and their ego's become involved it all goes down the gurgler.
Religion is a comfort to some people and I dont agree with a previous post that stated it was for the weak minded. I think if u are a truely religious person and behave in a religious manner it is for the strong minded as in these current times its difficult to follow religious teachings to the letter. There are so many temptations out there and thusly a person with a strong mind can only follow the teachings.
Now if ur talking about cults that is a different kettle of fish.
And if u are talking about Muslims and the Koran, nowhere does it state that one must kill themselves and others to gain enlightenment or "gods" favour.
But that is a totally different thread isnt it?

you dont need a strong mind to stick to religious teachings and resist temptation, but a strong will. a strong mind would let you use your REASONING to figure out that most religious teachings simply do not make sense.
i do agree with what you said about the rich/poor class. and suicide was made a sin so that the rich could milk the lower class for all its worth. they made the lower classes live like beep work all day, with seemingly no end in sight. so why go on? and if live is so horrible, why not just kill yourself and get into heaven? why its a sin, of course! how convenient.
and why do you say that cults are a different kettle of fish? all it is is another person, claiming to be englightened and speaking to god, the only difference being that this particular religion hasnt been around long enough and killed enough people to have it spread into a state of hegemony.

suicide is a sin because God decides when you die and when everyone dies he has a plan for all of us.
when someone commits suicide they're messing with God's plan and playing God. -

@ballerbabe:
god supposedly gave us free will so it is our "god given right" to kill ourselves if we so choose. i dont even know why i went with the premise that god exists and all this biblical nonsense. i feel stupider already.

uhh ya God gave us a free will but not with the intention of allowing us to kill ourselves God loved us so much that in creating us he gave us the freedom to reject that love that is the point of free will and if some people freely choose to commit suicide.. they are rejecting God's love and saying that his plan does not work for them and there is no other way even though there is and the way is through him

You know - I do believe in God. And the uses of religion. And I know of a mother who thinks that this movie would confirm/strengthen her religious beliefs. I know of a sister who would bang her head on the wall for such a comment. And then there's me - I think that I was created (or evolved - I have no issues here) with an inquiring mind. I think that the God I believe in would accuse me of wasting my talents if I did not explore what this world has to offer. And that if I accidentally did something wrong and was sorry for it, He (or She, again, no issues) would forgive me. Judgement is a timewaster promulgated by humans. A God of love does not judge - and if you love others, neither will you.
Just my 2 cents - no offence intended

isnt there also a quote "u make plans ans god laughs"
this means god knows how ur life will pan out before u make a choice.so wouldnt that also mean that god knows that u will commit suicide? and if this is true how can u go to hell and it being a sin if god knew u were going to do this all along? -

No offense but that didn't make a whole lot of sense. Just because God knows you're going to do something doesn't change whether it is a sin or not. If God knows I'm going to murder someone, because He is omnipotent and outside of time, it is still a sin. I still had the choice to murder or not murder. To kill myself or not to kill myself.
However, I've never heard the quote "you make plans and God laughs" and I'm not exactly sure where or if the Bible says that taking your own life is an unforgivable sin.
i'm done here
