As an avowed anti-religious dedicated atheist, I really liked this movie. It IS the kind of movie Christian filmmaker a should be making, like Mimi Rogers' The Rapture and Passion of the Christ.
The problem with Christian movies is they want to make super devil end of the world movies, but accessible to little kids. Take The Exorcist - it was very much a Christian movie and the devil loses in the end, just like the original Omen trilogy. Instead they make b-movies like Left Behind.
Anyway, I liked BTC because it was an entertaining, well done movie. I would, however, love to see a sequel, like The Vampire Lestat where we see the same movie from the pov of Eric Starck!
I don't know why other atheist naturalists (which is more in tune with practical satanism that worshiping a "devil") are so afraid of Christian movies. They can be great fun, just like any other action movie. -

I agree, it is a very good movie, one of the best in the religious-horror genre.
I actually think it's helped by the fact that the writers evidently are people who really believe in the Christian(well, some versions of Christian anyway) idea of a literal devil. You can kind of sense that they themselves are really frightened of this stuff, as opposed to just cynically exploiting it for commerical purposes.
I don't think it's widely known that BTC is a Mel Gibson production, via his Icon Films company. The reactionary Catholic worldview is pretty crackpot, but it is an outlook well-suited for constructing a believable horror-film universe.
And I agree with you about the Left Behind crapola. It seems that Christian art kinda needs fusion with secular producers to attain the best level of quality. A secular musician like Johnny Cash, for example, made far better Christian themed music than most of the CCM stuff I've heard. Granted, my familiarity with CCM is pretty fleeting. -

"The reactionary Catholic worldview is pretty crackpot . . ." Since the Catholic worldview is held by over 1 billion people, it really doesn't fit the definition of crackpot - which is a bizarre, outlandish opinion.
I really like this movie, partly because it fits in well with my worldview. As C.S.Lewis points out, "One of Satan's best tricks in the Twentieth Century, is to make people believe he doesn't exist".
