    False Confession. The detectives hammered away at him until he broke. Detectives get false confessions out of worn out suspects all the time(at least in movies and TV). Granted though, he did smell guilty.
    I think he lied in the beginning out of spite because he thought it was ridiculous he was a suspect, The continued to lie because he didn't want his dirty laundry aired
    The whole jealousy angle from Freeman's commentary sounds a little contrived. Yeah she was jealous, but what did that really have to do with his confession. Still, it's not too far off from the conclusion I drew from watching the movie.
    I can't believe how many people didn't get the end without listening to the commentary.

      They didn't get it because the writing is terrible. So badly written - no-one would make a false confession without an awful lot more coercion or psychological abuse.
