Question about the Alligator Boy

When Jack and Pilot go back to see Desmond for the second time and there are a bunch of guys there messing with him on of them is poking around in his swam and picks up something and smashes it against the railing, was that an egg???
For some reason this really bothered me, was the Alligator Boy going to have babies? Was there a nest I didn't see or something? It was just really strange and I can see why jack chose that moment to break the cooler over that guys face. Dis anybody else wonder about this?
