I get the impression that most of the people on this thread complaining about "clichs" have no bloody idea what the word actually means.
"Clich" is where the same idea has been used over and over again, to the point where it's lost any emotional or dramatic resonance. An unsurprising turn of the plot isn't a clich; it's just uninventive.
If you're going to use a concept to criticise a movie, you really should find out what that concept actually means, don't you think?
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Also, "unoriginality" does not equal "bad."

There really aren't any cliches in this film. No more than I've seen in any other film, at least.
          "Haha Optimus Prime."

"you say clich i say classic"
exactly! Like the cigar thing. So 80ies and that's a good thing, considering today's action films usually can't compare in the slightest to 80ies action films! This film was original, anyone who's talking about clich be better able to name some so far nobody in this thread has been able to

You do know that this movie is based on a comic that uses cliches as well, i.e. Nazis using occultism, Hellboy fighting fellow monsters despite being a monster himself, several of the cliches already mentioned for this movie, and so on. In fact, the only thing truly cliche about this movie was the love story between Hellboy and Liz Sherman, with Hellboy perceiving Myers as a rival. In the comics, Liz and Hellboy weren't love interests. I did like Myers though despite being a young sidekick.

You're talking about a movie based on a comic that took many of its cues from old pulp serials, "weird" horror stories in the mould of Algernon Blackwood or HP Lovecraft, and of course many, many folktales and legends.
If it didn't contain a few howling cliches, it wouldn't be Hellboy.

Also, for the benefit of a couple of those above, "cliche" is a noun not an adjective.
You can't say something is "very cliche". The phrase is "very cliched".
I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

What you refer to as clichs are in fact dramatic conventions (google it if you don't know what that means). All genre movies must employ them if they want to connect with the audience.
Guillermo del Toro understands what he is doing. This is why Hellboy, given its target market, has so many more "clichs" than Pan's Labyrinth.
