was it just an amalgam of evil? cthulhu? i felt the film didn't explain it well enough and the visuals were to vague to get a sense of what those things were exactly (although i suppose that could have been done on purpose to excite the viewer's imagination further)

Its a very long story. Go to wikipedia and type Ogdru Jahad. "the Ogdru Jahad sealed by their creator in a prison of crystal and placed in the heart of the abyss." Basically, bad people with lots of power locked up and prophesied to return and make destruction sandwiches. Guess who has the key to let them out? Give up? Its..ah you know.

It explains all you need to know in the opening text - something about how in the coldest regions of space, the seven gods of chaos - the Ogdru Jahad - slumber in their crystal prison.
Also intriguing to me is that reddish atmosphere near the crystal prison. Perhaps it's the entrance to wherever Hellboy is from, since that's where the portal leads to at the beginning of the film.

And a little Stephen King. Mysteris De Vermiis (Mysteries of the Worm) features in his short story 'Jerusalem's Lot'. Then again, maybe he got that from somewhere else. Does anybody know who invented that book?
