Commodus couldn't do that, Maximus was a Roman hero so he had to kill him in public in what would at least
appear
to be a fair fight.
It seems to me that you don't fully understand the finer points of story telling, maybe you should stick to more basic fare. -

Listen, I am a history buff. I enjoy reading history and I know for a fact that if Gladiator had been real life, all the Emperor had to do is order his guards to kill Maximus or whatever his name is, on his cell at night. Then the word would be out the next day that he died of some disease. Seriously the plot is nonsensical. Just because it's fiction doesn't mean it doesn't mean it doesn't have to make sense.
