Maybe the best movie ever made.

Gladiator is an absolutely wonderful movie. However, I don't think it qualifies for "best movie ever made." It is beautifully shot and tells a wonderful story, but it's just an epic. There isn't any depth to the film itself. It doesn't make you think. It's simply just a beautiful tale of an old world hero. There aren't really any surprises.

There's no 'maybe' about it. We wouldn't have had the 'Spartacus' TV show without it, or possibly 'Game of Thrones', either. Not to mention all the other Swords and Sandals movies of the past 25 years.
As for the soundtrack, very little of Hans Zimmer's work since doesn't refer back to it.

2000 wasn't a particularly strong year in general, but you're entitled to your own opinion..
*Requiem for a Dream
*Ammores Perros
*Gladiator
*Cast Away
*O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Probably some of my fav movies, right there.

What does it mean to be the best movie? I would define that it as being of the most value to you. I think that doesn't limit it to following the criteria of needing to be thought provoking, the best storyline, the best acting, or best cinematography.
Gladiator to me is the best movie for many of the same reasons others like it. It provides value to me because it makes me feel really good, emotional, and in touch with my life and soul. The music is exquisite, the storyline is beautiful and inspiring, the acting, directing, and cinematography is masterful. It makes me feel so good, and ultimately that's what I care about so I consider it my favorite movie.
