Yeah I know it spoofed the fandom mainly but it did spoof the show too the rest of the movie was a Star Trek spoof.

Why would they spoof something that wasn't relevant?
What was the reason? Because there is clearly an audience and they thought it would be funny.

It's not really a spoof of Star Trek. It's more about the behind the scenes stuff. For example, the scene where Jason overhears people talking beep about him in the bathroom literally happened to Shatner.
I don't really understand what you're getting at, either. This was never meant to be the beginning of a franchise. They were not in anyway trying to do a remake of Star Trek.

My point was that I think at the time this came out a lot of tv shows were getting made into movies. I just thought it was interesting that they made a spoof of Star Trek and not an actual Star Trek movie. Again not a bad thing.

I don't mean this in a bad way. Basically I mean when this movie came out Star Trek was still pretty relevant. I just think it's strange that they focused a whole movie around being a Star Trek spoof. I can understand if Star Trek was dying down or something and they were trying to do a remake of Star Trek but ended up making it into a spoof instead. What was the reason behind this idea?
For a spoof to work it has to be a) centered on something relevant; b) well done, and c) funny. Star Trek and Star Trek fandom was, and is, still relevant, the film was well observed, and the set up and gags were funny. What more could anyone want.

Maybe the screenwriter saw that Star Trek was crying out to be spoofed and he had really funny ideas about how to do it. BUT, I think it was way more than a spoof. Alan Rickman said that he thought the movie was mostly about love. So there it's a spoof with a message!

I don't get your point, Patrick.

Why not ? Its fun, and its a brilliant movie - very likely the funniest movie I know.

I guess the answer why Star Trek was chosen, is because Star Wars already had been done by Mel Brooks with a hilarious movie.
Then it was time to do the same with Star Trek and there its done so good, that even Jonathan Frakes & Patrick Stewart loves the movie.

I just watched this movie, and I think yeah, it was spoofing Star Trek. But more importantly, it was making fun of crazy fandoms, actors who have seen better days (think Bojack Horseman), and devoted fans. But it was never mean spirited. In the end it was spoofing a show that has been loved by watchers for years, and it's a reminder that people's lives have been changed by such shows. It's not just about spoofing star trek. It's a love letter to these campy, old shows that nevertheless have inspired fans for years (ex. Buffy, Xena, Star Trek, etc.). This movie was awesome.

I got the impression they were spoofing space science Fiction television in general(and their fandoms) with special attention to Star Trek. At the end of the movie, when they are going through the endless ventilation shaft corridors that look the same with the smashing area after that, was far more appropriate for Doctor Who than Star Trek.
