I'm not a hardcore trekkie. I think though that like most geek things there are two types, those that are able to laugh at themselves and those that can't. For example I am a D&D geek. I still get a kick out of jokes made about D&D and D&D geeks, especially the ones that have a ring of truth. I imagine that the hardcore trekkies that fall into the same category, likely LOVE Galaxy Quest.

rolls dice You do not find a Ring of Truth, but you DO find a +1 Ring of Protection. -

As a hard core Trekkie, I too loved this movie. To be honest, I find Galaxy Quest is more true to Star Trek than many of the other Star Treks that came out after the original series. Along came good ol' J.J.'s "perversion" and even that was more faithful to Star Trek then the other installments.

To hate this, I think someone would have to be the worst kind of self-important trekkie out there, and also so humorless and unobservant that you'd fail to see that it's really a kind of love-letter to both Trek and its fans.

I don't know why my friend didn't like it. She was so virulent in her hostility toward GQ that I didn't want to pursue the subject. For one thing, I thought she was nuts not to like it, but on the other hand I'd never asked a Trekkie before how they liked GQ, so I didn't know if I was getting into some kind of established argument or what.
We were new acquaintances at the time, and we're not friends anymore! So I don't know what the heck was in her mind. I've been really relieved to see that her opinion is not shared by anyone on this board. She is an unusual person, that's for sure. She's also very young and has had a really hard life. I imagine she'll change her view as she gets older. -

All the Trek fans I know - including me - loved Galaxy Quest. The more they are into Trekdom, the greater their appreciation of GQ, because they can see and appreciate all those little details which work even better when one can see the reference.

I used to be quite a trekkie, but love Galaxy Quest. It's so funny, which Star Trek isn't sent out to be. I must admit to not having watched GQ for a few years, but the fact I have my own copy of it means I like it!

decroissance: your friend probably mistakenly thought Galaxy Quest was making fun of Star trek, insulting Star Trek. Just my guess.
Like the others on this thread, I'm a big Star Trek fan and I absolutely LOVED Galaxy Quest! -

Just a thought, but as you mention your friend is very young perhaps she is a fan of the Star Trek reboot and just doesn't get TOS or GalaxyQuest.

I don't know a single person who dislikes
Galaxy Quest
. And, in fact, the Trekkies I know tend to be the people who are most vocal about
loving
the film. Your friend is the first Trekkie I've ever heard of who dislikes it.
And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point? -

I recommended this movie to a fellow Trekkie who then went ballistic. She said she would never watch this movie because it was making fun of Trekkies. She changed her mind and finally watched it a few months later and raved about how great the movie was. Of course, I couldn't resist saying "I told you so."
Another Trekkie friend just found out about this movie and asked me if I saw it and is it any good. Huge thumbs up from me so I guess "Galaxy Quest" is about to soon have another fan. -

I'm a Trek fan and I like Galaxy Quest. It's a great parody of Star Trek. I didn't find it insulting at all. I think what's really insulting is J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot, which in many ways is a mockery of Star Trek.
