That was a big, loud, dumb action flick with not much of a story. I've forgotten 99% of what happened in it and honestly have no intention of ever watching it again to refresh my memory. It's Star Dreck, not Star Trek.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is the only film or television series bearing the name Star Trek I don't own on DVD and have never watched, apart from "The Animated Series". I simply couldn't bother watching it; it seems obvious that there is nothing left of the original spirit of Star Trek in it.
So I can't answer your specific question. But I can tell you this: "Galaxy Quest" is not only a much cleverer, funnier, and overall better film than J.J. Abrams' previous "Star Trek", it's also much more Star Trek than "Star Trek" at that. And every single Trekkie I know agrees.
And that really says it all, doesn't it?

Okay, that's not fair. You should really give The Animated Series a try. It's actually even better than Batman: TAS, believe it or not.

According to the voters at at least one Con, Galaxy Quest is the 7th best Star Trek movie ever made.

Galaxy Quest is very good, but Star Trek Into Darkness is better.
