I'm an St fan but I don't like Shatner. I guess it's no different than being an St fan but hating every St post TOS. Or being an St Fan but hating DS9, VOY, or ENT. And let's not forget, being an ST fan but hating the new ST films.
A lot of ST fans don't like all of ST much less all the actors on ST.

That's easy to say NOW. Back then, nerds and nerd culture were still shat upon by the mainstream public, and "nerds" were still very much at risk of getting their asses kicked just for liking what they liked. Geek-chic didn't hit until about ten years after this movie was made.
2010's pop culture is worlds away from 1999 pop culture.
