Anytime people bring up Avatar, they're always talking about how great the visuals were. Personally, I found them unconvincing. But worse, they never say there were great performances or a great script, because obviously there weren't any.
GQ deserved so much more. If you offered me $100 to watch Avatar or let me watch GQ for nothing, I would choose GQ. The visuals were okay although not perfect, but the cast was outstanding, especially Rockwell, Rickman, Colantani, Shalhoub and Long, and the script is wickedly funny. I just think it's a much better movie and Avatar seriously doesn't deserve to be the #1 box office draw of all time.

I would patiently watch Avatar for $100 and then spend some of that on pizza to eat while watching Galaxy Quest one more time because it never gets old.

        Agreed.
I dont like Avatar much. It switches from Science Fiction to Fantasy in the middle of the movie and the story is, well, boring, unconvincing, generic, predictable, bla, meh.
Galacy Quest on the other hand is pure awesome. One extremely scene after the other. Tons of hilarious dialogue. Etc.
You shall have no other Kates before Kate Winslet.

I just realized I've never actually watched Avatar without Rifftrax.

Avatar does look beautiful. But if you don't see it in the theater, there's really no reason to see it. It doesn't tell a new or even interesting story. But it is the first film to use 3D properly. To draw the audience into the world rather than distract the audience by having things flying at them constantly.
I don't know why you're even comparing them though. They're two completely different movies trying to do two completely different things. GQ is more fun, but they're really very different movies.
I just think it's a much better movie and Avatar seriously doesn't deserve to be the #1 box office draw of all time.
What a movie deserves is irrelevant. Since this is factually what happened.

At this point Avatar is not overated anymore. A very large percentage of fans will SHAME anyone one who goes as far as praise something tiny from the film. It's become unwritten rule to always point out how overated and bad (unoriginal) and unimaginative the film is. For every avatar fan theirs hundreds more shaming the film
