I don't get the hate, I actually really enjoyed it when it came out. I hadn't even heard of Scientology back then! It was just a sci fi action movie with some oversized aliens and I loved it!
I really don't get the hate, people are so critical these days. -

Your post is as believable as Kirstie Alley not cheating on a diet. Did you really even see this film? You sound like you are a member of Scientology. Really, you come off that way to me.
I saw this film when it came out and just watched it again recently for laughs. It really is so bad on so many levels that it's hard to even take seriously as a real film project made by professionals. I hope the non-believers, such as Forest Whitaker, were paid handsomely to participate in this dreck. I have read that Whitaker has stated that he regrets ever having anything to do with Battlefield Earth. When the principals are willing to state publicly that the movie sucks, that should be a huge clue to the rest of us.
Challenge: try to get through this movie without once rolling your eyes, moaning in annoyance, laughing so hard your belly splits or spit taking your beverage of choice. It's not possible. Really, it isn't.
Idiots abound. This means you.

Really? There is not a single good thing about the movie. Awful story, awful acting, awful special effects, awful camerawork, full of plot holes, etc. etc.
Every
aspect of this movie is terrible. The movie is so bad that many of the actors involved have expressed regret for appearing in it. -

This movie is so unintentionally hilarious that it's almost awesome. It's no Plan 9 but it's close. There are more WTF??? moments in this POS than in a weeklong marathon of SyFy original movies.
I would give this movie a 1 but I still enjoy watching it for all the wrong reasons. -

You lost me when you said you rather watch this over the Star Wars prequels.

The problem with the movie is that it tried to cram like 500 pages worth of novel into a 2 hour (118 min) movie. IIRC, the book was like 1000+ odd pages long - and this movie covers roughly half of the book.
As such, movies have to trim LOTS of the narrative and story in order to fit the story into the constraints of the motion picture format. Stuff like how the people of Earth managed to figure out how to fly those Harrier jump jets after 1000 years of them sitting in storage. That's the problem with taking books and making movies out of them.
Had they done a full rendition of the book, the movie would probably be like 8+ hours long. (My guesstimation) And no one would be willing to put up with that.
It's far better to read the book (or at least the 1st half of it) before watching the movie - it makes so much more sense that way. Amazon's got copies of the book - cheap too. -

I SO wish the Mystery Science Theater guys would do a show on this film, it would be SO SO SO funny!!!
It's impossible to watch this and not think about how it comes from the mind of a man diagnosed as a sociopath who managed to convince a lot of feeble minds to follow him in a cult, called it a religion and created a belief system that is based on insane paranoia. -

They already did, it's called RiffTrax. Go to their site (rifftrax.com) and download the audio, you can listen to it through the movie, or download a torrent with the audio already synced and donate the money you would have spend on the RiffTrax to RiffTrax!

Because it's bad. I'll admit I liked it when it first came out, but I was probably 13 at the time. I tried to watch it again recently and couldn't finish. This movie does not stand the test of time.
Never read the book, and couldn't care less about Scientology.
