ok
to be honest
The only "Real" story line in RE1 is Chris' story, if you play through Chris game you wil see that Barry is mentioned but never seen therefore he musn't have experienced the mansion (although the continuity in the book is awful, it says he was there)
But if you play Jill's version, he has a bigger role, the ending changes due to what you do as you progress through the game.
Certain events will cause Barry to die and some will cause him to survive, there are a few endings for each character:
Jill1 - Escapes with Chris & Barry - Mansion explodes
Jill2 - Escapes with Chris & Barry - Mansion doesn't expload, Tyrant lives
Jill3 - Escapes with Barry - Mansion exploads, killing Chris with it
Jill4 - Escapes with Barry - Mansion doesnt expload, Chris gets left behind
Jill5 - Escapes with Chris - Mansion doesnt expload, Barry gets killed
Jill6 - Escapes by herself - Mansion doesnt expload, Barry dies, Chris gets left behind.
Chris1 - Escapes with Jill & Rebecca - Mansion exploads
Chris2 - Escapes with Jill & Rebecca - Mansion doesnt expload, Tyrant lives
Chris3 - Escapes with Jill - Mansion doesnt expload, Rebecca gets killed
Chris4 - Escapes with Rebecca - Mansion exploads, killing Jill with it
Chris5 - Escapes by himself - Mansion doesnt expload - Rebecca dies, Jill gets left behinf. -

Finally Someone actually knows how the game ends, depending on how well you progress. I personally think jills storyline is better (i found chris to annoy me for some reason). Resident evil is a classic and i was over joyed to find that it was released on the gamecube with a more in depth storyline. I urge annyone to play it as it is a true classic, if you play the gamecube version beware of Lisa Trevor She's HIDEOUS!!!!!!

Damn the GC version has extra characters! Well anyway I seem to remember that Barry got injured and left a picture before he died and told you to go on ahead, but then I also remeber somehow playing through it from a saved game and found his body and picked up the picture. Its all a bit fuzzy, cause I can also remember playing through it another time and he beat up Wesker and then got his ass kicked by the Tyrant, but survived, lol. So like someone else mentioned there are a great deal of different endings, don't know what events effect it though. Hey I know my memory of the game is a bit hazy but I think Barry did appear in Chris' game near the end, he had something to do with Wesker's plan. Anyway this is defo the strongest in the series, best story and characters and dead (excuse the pun) eerie, right through the game I had a sense of dread about what was in the next room or lurking round the corner. The thing with the multiple endings was good as well IMO, the music, settings, everything was great. The other games did not come close and felt like cash-ins made to please action fans rather than the fans of survival horror.

What is it that causes the endings to be different?
I've completed the game twice, once as Chris where I escaped with Jill and Rebecca and the mansion exploded, and once as Jill where I escaped with Chris but the mansion didn't explode. Seems a bit odd because the game is much harder when you play as Chris. -

It all depends on which descisions you make in conversations with Barry. You're can choose "yes" or "no" and these answers are crucial in you trusting Barry or not.
If you trust Barry, he'll live
If you don't, he'll be EATEN ALIVE! -

Or if you don't give him his gun back he'll die. And most people would say, "You double-crossed me barry I'm not giving you your gun back!" and let him die.
But I gave him his gun back and pushed the stones into the abyss and then Lisa's all like, "Mo-ther!" and walks to the edge (play the
End of Days
music) and lets herself fall into the abyss
I feel bad for Lisa in some waysI cannot translate that letter in the cabin. -

In the actual RE storyline, Barry survives and, believe it or not, so does Wesker.
In RE2, it's mentioned in Chris' journal that Barry goes to Europe along with the remaing STARS members to attack Umbrella's main base (this is also mentioned in Jill's journal in #3). There's also an alternate ending in the third one where Barry flies Jill and Carlos out of the city before it explodes.
In Code: Veronica, Wesker is revealed to be alive. In the Wesker's Report DVD that came with the PS2 version, it turns out that he was in leagues with William Birkin, the scientitst who gets mutated into that giant monster in the second one. It turns out that Birkin gave Wesker some kind of formula that would give him these superhuman abilities. The catch was that it could only be activated upon death. So, he actually let the Tyrant kill him!
