What's the deal with Hitchcock?

As anyone who saw the film noticed, there's huge amount of references to Hitchcock but why? It's almost like name dropping for no one with no real reason. I don't recall any specific references to Hitchcock movies or even his first name being mentioned. Did someone get the point? Did the writer suddenly realize it's going to be bad and decided to hint the audience, that they could be watching a Hitchcock film instead of this random slasher film?
Why Hitchcock? Why did the school name their own special trophy by Hitchcock? What did Hitchcock have to do with the school? Did I just miss something? Don't they have a patron of their own, who's name they could use? Like someone who gratuated from the school, or maybe the founder? They do give some names, that are suppose to be big.
Only mention to Hitchcock films just gives away the fact that no one involved knew why his films were so great.
So what's the idea? -

You have made an interseting point there.
I really cannot think why the hitchcock thing was so big. The only thing i can think of is that as Hitchcock is considered something of a god amongst directors and was known as the "Master of Suspence" and this being a horror movie perhaps the writer was a fan and this is his own little nod to "Hitch". The only other reference is the closing credits music which was from the "Alfred Hitchcock presents" tv show.

There was a lot more references than the award and the credits. There was a lot more. I don't remember many of them, but there was one for Birds and another Vertigo I know.

I think the school naming the trophy "The Hitchcock Award" is the easiest to answer. Hitchcock is considered one of the all-time great directors. Yeah, his forte was the suspense-thriller genre, but at the same time, he was respected universally, by both audiences and other filmmakers. Many filmmakers hold Hitchcock in high regard, not just those that specialize in the horror-suspense-thriller genre. And his films over the years touched upon many issues, even if the main plot was a suspense plot. Plus, he acutally did do a few films that were not his usual offering, and even if not well-received at the time, they have been since regarded as just as good as some of his suspense films. So the name "Hitchcock" symbolizes excellence in filmmaking.

So far here are the references and Hitchcock themes I've picked up on. The intro has the music from Hitchcock Presents, the wrong man/wrong place at the wrong time, use of doubles, the screaming over the killing was the main device in the 39 Steps, cant trust the police/fear of authority, the light house in Vertigo, paranoia.
It also references Dario Argento heavily with an almost shot for shot reenactment of the razor wire scene from Suspiria, the black glove and never seen killer, and the use of dogs which is very common in other Italian horror films as well.
There are also references to Many other horror films such as Peeping Tom, My Bloody Valentine, Scream, etc.
Also many references to the French new wave post modern film makers like Goddard and Traffaut professor was talking about in the office with the other professor when the girl came in to tell what her thesis was going to be. -
