Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ginger Snaps

    brandonhelee — 10 years ago(October 18, 2015 09:54 PM)

I just watched the whole Ginger Snaps trilogy a few days ago and I must say I really enjoyed it.
    Ginger Snaps ***** of *****
"This film is the best werewolf film in my opinon bare none I like that it's different and has themes. The cast does a great job.The story is fantastic"
    Ginger Snaps 2:Unleashed **** of *****
"I enjoyed this one a little less than the original but it's still great in my books a terrific follow up to the original and progresses the story alone pretty awesomely"
    Ginger Snaps Back:The Beginning *** of *****
"This film to me is still pretty awesome but for the most part I thought it was a major drop off of quality compared to the first two.The only way I can get behind this film is if viewed as a solo entity disconnected from the Ginger Snaps series because it doesn't work well to me in that fashion. The film has some fun ideas and a neat location just doesn't take the potential Part 2's plot had for a sequel"
Overall three great films despite them getting increasingly worse they still are good and I'd be up for a Ginger Snaps IV and I hope it retcon's Part 3 and follows the excellent build up from 1 & 2 and ignores 3.

I love the first film. I remember watching these movies in high school, all within a day of each other on youtube. I actually took the internet pseudonym "Fitzgerald" as a tribute to Ginger Snaps and my location counts as "Bailey Downs"I don't know whether thats the sign of an uber sad fan or someone with way too much time on his hands but either way, I did it.
The first one is a film I watch annually on Halloween. Its not only my favourite Werewolf film, not only my favourite horror film, but its in my top 3 favourite films ever made. I'm actually surprised it got 2 sequels considering this film was actually severely decreased its marketing after Columbine and thus, only screened in one theater in the US. However, just about everything in this film is perfect as for what they were trying to do.
The second oneI'm sorry, it was worse than the third. Not even the fact that it displays Tatiana Maslany in a setting close to Bailey Downs (confirming that Orphan Black and Ginger Snaps are in continuity of each other, one of my favourite shows in continuity of one of my favourite films, Who DOESN'T want that?) saves it. The idea of the main character slowly becoming a werewolf in a mental hospital is actually really cool and some of the supporting cast are pretty good (although the entire movie, pretty much belongs to Emily) and the Ginger hallucinations are actually a great idea but that is as about as far as my praise for this movie goes. It suffers from a dumb twist and you can kind of tell that whoever the Director was, he wanted the series pretty much dead and buried. Why else would it end off like that? Plus there's also that masturbation scene, the fact that the male werewolf stalking Brigitte is never explained as to who he is (I think the movie thought that without the male werewolf, the film would be boring, not taking into account that its still boring with it).
The thirdis underrated. Its stupid, sure, but its "flashback episodes of Dark Shadows" fun kind of stupid. I know I'm technically using a different measuring stick to the second and first films butif I was to compare it to the first where else could this film have gone but down? Honestly, the last 20 minutes is actually a really great climax to the whole film and shows a second option Brigitte could've taken when it came to Werewolfism, to submit to it. True, nothing in the original film was as politically corrupt as the third film but its still a great climax that makes this film memorable. Yes, I freely admit, while I liked this film more than the second, its not that memorable. There's nothing separating it from "Werewolf: The Beast Among Us" besides "it has Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle and that climax of the film was amazing".

        WOW what a excellent response!!!
To me I enjoy all three despite me thinking Part 3 would've been better as it's own film separate from the series.
To me Ginger Snaps & Ginger Snaps 2:Unleashed are two terrific cinematic masterpieces of film and only if we got a legitimate third film that follows the events of Part 2 we would have one fine trilogy.
Ginger Snaps Back:The Beginning as much as I do like it and enjoy it barely hits the mark the first two had.

I guess I am somewhat biased due to the fact that not only did this movie help me out in a time when I felt suicidal (yes, this movie actuallyHELPED when it came to that!), not only did my discovery of John Fawcett's career make me look at The Boys Club (1997) (which is also a really great film if your into teenage led psychological thrillerI know how that sounds but trust me, ITS GOOD!) and Orphan Black (as I said earlier, one of my favourite shows) but it introduced me to Lost Girl which actually IS my favourite show and the character there, Kenzi, pretty much did the rest in terms of helping me "fix" depression.
Also, I met an imdb user on here, which, if you look at the Boards history, you'll notice quite quickly, called Freeist and he helped me out in terms of what to look for in becoming a writer, which is what I always wanted to do.
So its a bit of a "Ginger Snaps helped me meet great people and its the main catalyst for my taste in movies and TV shows today" thing going on but looking at it, the reason for that is because the movie is really beep good!
