Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Hannibal

I have seen Silence of the Lambs several times and watched Hannibal for the first time a couple weeks ago. I recall in Silence, Anthony Hopkins soundedwell not British. But then in Hannibal it sounded a lot more British. I ASSUME Anthony Hopkins just sort of didn't bother putting on the same accent for Hannibal and was just sort of using his natural speaking voice. Or maybe I'm just terrible with accents and that's why I'm not sure what's happening there. Anyone know or mind explaining?

Anthony Hopkins is indeed British, but the character of Hannibal is neither British nor American. He's in fact Lithuanian. But his extensive travel and grasp of various languages has given him a sort of "unplaceable" accent. You can tell in the way that Hannibal alters his pronunciation of certain words based on the accent of the person he's speaking with, so as to better blend in and put them at ease.
