On my first viewing, this was a good movie. But watching it again, I found it hard to enjoy this movie on it's true merits, what with the listless characters, largely due to JLO's emotionally detached performance.
And what's with the grimaces everyone has on their face during her video moment? I think it was badly directed.
Could have had so much, but it fell flat.

That's J. Lo for you . . . pretty much emotionally detatched in everything she's in. The only saving grace of this movie was Jim Caviezel's character.

Her character is supposed to be emotinally detached! The movie would have been all wrong if she had been emotional without any holding back. She's a cop (cops are supposed to be tough and uh detached, it's an important thing for them to learn and then they don't just unlearn it when they are off duty) and not to mention, she's really afraid of falling in love or getting close to people. Her father beat her mom and then she took the blame when she tried to help. She has no real friends- just male co-workers. She probably became a cop because of her fears. It's obvious she hasn't opened up to anyone in quite some time. when you don't express your feelings, or have an outlet for your eomotions, you become detached from them.
the fact that she was 'emotinally detached' is why her acting was great in this movie.
Everyone is grimacing duing her video moment because they are afraid she is going to say something awful- because they know that she's the one who speaks about the unspeakable and they know there is bad blood between her and her dad. They are afraid that there is going to be a scene.

Be guarded or self-protective is not at all the same as being emotionally barren. Someone may have missed the point of the character's relationship.

Disagree. It couldn't have been that detached.I cried when she was speaking into the video camera at her mom's house. I thought she was absolutely wonderful.and I'm not a huge Lopez fan. jmho. peace

I think this was an emotionally rich, well-written and superbly acted movie that tackles some difficult themes, does so with intelligence and treats its characters with compassion and understanding. It's a gem of a film.

Agree 100%. I am not a big fan of Jennifer Lopez's acting at all. But she shined here, in fact she nailed this role.
I too cried when she spoke at her parents' party.
I went through some of that and it still hurts, so it was like she wasn't acting there. It seemed so believable.
This is easily her best role to date.
