I was flipping channels and caught this movie from the start.
At first I was intrigued. The ambiguity and mystery of Catch What was he? a guardian angel? a ghost?
The movie then seemed to take a left turn and then wound up in the weeds. Very unfocused and meandering. It's like someone switched directors and plot mid way through the film.
To me, there was the the potential of a great film here but they want for the sentimental, "slice of life" ending in the third act.

This was never supposed to be a supernatural movie!

I don't think the OP means that it was supposed to be a supernatural movie, and I agree with him/her.
This film was very "obscure" so to speak from the beginning. I don't know if this is going to make sense (hey, it's late), but I feel like the tone of the movie didn't match the plot. The tone was saying "hey I'm dark and mysterious and ambiguous" and it totally sparked my curiosity. The plot was much more straightforward nothing really secretive or creepy happened to the two of them. Yes, they both experienced great pain and loss, but nothing, in
        my
opinion, that matched the overall vibe of the film.

          I understand what you're saying, ae36.
All I know is this is one of those way overhyped movies. Maybe because it came out during those few years Jennifer Lopez was on top of the Hollywood Actress dog pile.
Watching those scenes with her cop buddies, I thought the movie was going to be good. At some point, it became silly and unwatchable. Maybe around the scene where Sharon stood up Catch for coffee, then he went to her apartment to yell at her.
The only reason I gave the movie a chance was because of the list of stars that I like: Jeremy Sisto, Terrence Howard, Sonia Braga and James Caviezel.
Oh well, can't win them all.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.
