It was such a sad ending it made me cry. Who else ended up crying at the end?

SPOILERS
you didn't get it she said she was going to her family, she said she talked to them and they were expecting her home so she wasn't going to return to the apartment but I think if Nelson wanted to find her again he could.. he could ask her friend where her family lived.. but the point was he let her go he did what she wanted him to do he agreed not to look for her again and continue whit his life.. -

In what scene did she talk about going to her family? Was it out on the bridge on the last scene???
I've seen this movie a few times and never heard her say she was going to her family.
She said "It's starting to happen.." which I assumed meant she died. I always got the impression she must've gone and died in some alley way somewhere!! Horrible.. but that's what I thought must've happened.. that's how I interpreted it. I REALLY hope I'm wrong!! -

It is a good movie and i agree that the ending made me cry bcos i wanted the relationship between Nelson Moss and Sarah Deever to continue but unfortunately that didn't happen. They broke-up in the last scene and more than their break-up the uncertainity about Sarah Deever(whether she is dead or alive) at the end is what that is causing me a lot of pain to tears. The background music during the last scene also haunted me more when i saw the climax and it created an impact on me.

Like what claudiuseven said, just before she ties her scarf over his eyes, she tells him that she's going home, back to her family. I just saw the movie for the first time and I don't understand why some people believe she jumped from the bridge, etc. She wants to be with him but can't at the same time because she's dying and it is more evident now than before. See how sick she was and getting pale towards the end of the movie? All she wants is for him to remember the good times they had together, not when she's laying on her death bed. And as for Nelson not going after her, he did with the scarf over his eyes but only later realizing after removing the scarf that she's not there and he has to move on with his life with only the good memories he had with Sara.

When she said she was going to her family (those who were waiting for her in heaven), they were expecting her that meant she was ready to die. Not that she was physically going home to her family
Because she wasn't even speaking to her sister.

You know my ex loved this movie to death and I who tends to like a good chick flick gave it the befefit of the doubt. I really really wanted to like it, and after it was over and the sobbing (my ex) was profuse I lied and said it was great.
In all honesty I hated the ending, she ran off leaving him wondering how she was when she passed and never really achieving closure. I thought it was such a cowardly act. Now before you flame me, my mother's boyfriend who I believed would most likely become my step father ran off to die without a word when he found out he had terminal cancer. I loved the guy more than my biological father, and to this day I feel no closure with his death.
To me that ending just ruined what was a mildly charming saturday afternoon flick. It just felt like such a major cop out on her part. -

I'm the same way as you. Some people only want you to remember the way they once were. I'd always remember that so i'd rather have as much time as I can with them. So i think they are kinda being selfish.
Yet, you have to respect someone's wishes in a situation like that, no matter how tough it is. -

I believe that she knew she was dying all along thats why there was an "October".Most likely there was a September,an August,so on and so forth. She was trying to change a guy a month until she died.
i may be right,i may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you're looking for -

I believe that what she actually said was that she was "going home" - meaning, as swayedbytrinkets suggested, that she was going to die and would go to heaven, where they were waiting for her.
Thank you!! I'm kind of surprised people think anything else than she was going to commit suicide! It seemed evident to me, as she stated that "Its starting to happen" meaning the intense suffering had begun and she didn't want to experience that or make Nelson watch it. She is 'going home', meaning she is thinking of heaven. And "They know I"m coming" I took as meaning angels, lost loved ones or whomever she believes is in heaven waiting to care for her.
And I never believed she was going to her family, as she runs out of her house in her pajamas, with no purse and no money. And Nelson and Sara are way too upset for her simply returning to her family. She ties the scarf around his head so he doesn't have to watch her as she walks away, to commit suicide.

For me it was obvious that she jumped off that ramp. Hovewer less obvious was, why he just walked away? I guess it was better ending than scene where he is standing above her dead corpse.Correct me if im wrong please.
