It was my impression that Sara goes to the bridge to kill herself, and when she says she is "Going home" that it meant heaven.
Some say she literally meant going home, to her family.
I tend to think she killed herself, as she runs out of the house with NO clothing, purse, suitcase, anything. And we see the panaoramic view of the highway, to imply she was going to jump somewhere along there.
But if she committed suicide, why do we not hear any tires of cars stopping? I would have thought Sara would never hurt anyone by jumping in front of their car, but surely someone would see her jump??

Watching the film again, I think you're right. I misinterpreted the line where she said to him she was giving hi enough time to get his things. I thought that Sara running to the bridge, combined with the long camera shot of the bridge and trafficand what she said 'about going home' that it meant she was committing suicide.
I guess that's a happier ending then. I could never have left Nelson, even then.

He truely loved her and he knew she loved him. Thats why she didn't want him to see her like that, the immortal memory of the month they had together was enough to last a lifetime (believe me, i know). She knew if he stayed he would see her die and she didn't want it to be his last memory of her.

I still think the ending fell flat with Sarah just going home to her family.
It sounds bad I know, but in terms of cinematic plots, it would have almost been 'better' if she had ended her life.
She wouldn't suffer any more, and Nelson would know that too.

I liked this movie overall. I think Charlize was so beautiful. I can understand why she wanted to end it her way, but I guess my problem is how it leaves Nelson. He will never really get any closure. How will he ever be able to "get on with his life". My wife died almost 20 years ago and I was by her side when she died of breast cancer. I felt her turn cold and it was still (and continues to be) hard to believe/accept/etc. I know how much I prayed that it wasn't true, and asked God to bring her back. If I had been in Nelsons place I think I would continue to look for her forever and "see" her all over, especially in places we had been together.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I know its bittersweet to be with someone when they pass; I've been there.
At least we did get to say goodbye as best we could.
To this film, I still am bothered by this ending. Why did the film work so hard to show Sara at the bridge, complete with a long aerial shot of the traffic below. We hear her weep that she is 'going home' & 'they know I'm coming'.
These are things that people tend to say in films when they have decided to
commit suicide
!
Sara never said 'I'm going home to my family.'
The ending was poor, in my opinion. Flat.
YetI still have a soft spot for this film.
