Did they make the clothes ugly on purpose?

Were the clothes supposed to look ugly to illustrate that the company could get the young people to buy even low quality items with the subliminal messages?
And when was it set? I looked very 70s/60s and I noticed everyone in the movie was wearing bell bottoms -

Um what? Do you have amnesia? Before people wore skinny jeans they wore flared and boot cut jeans. It was set in the year it was made (2000ish?). How could you possibly think it was set in the 70s unless you were massively retarded?

believe it or not that's what people wore in 1999-2001. I remember going to a now defunct store called contempo casuals that had leopard print everything, leather or faux leather jeans that were pink, red, red leopard, blue leopard print. And everyone wore street wear make up which was glittery and shimmery.

I was still a kid when this movie came out, but even I knew flared jeans were the trend, I wore them myself.
Guess what? They're making a comeback this fall, same with leopard print. I work in retail at a mall and all the stores are selling that, including mine. -

Well, they were an extreme version with very bright colors, but that was how people dressed overall. YouTube any 90s boy band like BSB or N*SYNC and that was what DuJour looked likecoordinated outfits and cargo or leather pants. Or Destiny's Child's magazine covers. Flared pants were so popular.
Although your sentence could be true since it applies to the real world and this movie was a satirical comment on pop culture.
Did you mean to hit reply to me or the original poster? -

Yeah, early 2000's style was all about the flared out jeans and the big patterns. A lot of bright purple leopard, orange furs, crazy stuff like that. Body glitter was also in style, and bright eye shadows. Google late 90's stars like Britney, Christina, Jessica, Mandy Moore and you'll see some fashion disasters, but trends come and go. Now everything is toned downed, natural make up is more in style but who knows what will change in ten years
