Why the need to change so much from the original story? Isn't that kind of obnoxious? I was looking forward to seeing a movie, not get lectured on the evils of whitey

Yes, vastly different from the novel and the 1939 film. It is just a case of political correctness in a politically correct world and to hell with the facts.
