Funny, I haven't heard even one. The only time I've heard it referenced in real life was when one of my girl friends asked if guys actually do the circle jerkI couldn't believe people actually think that. I mean, maybe if you want to get into the swinger scene, that's kind an easier prelude? But even then, I still think it'd be pretty awkward..I mean, how do you even maintain an erection in a situation like that?

I think the most important thing to bring into context here is the context itself.
The way you say it "casually masturbating
with
your best friend" invokes the thought of you and your friend or better here on screen two men/boys masturbating five feet from each other in a room one on the couch, one in a chair possibly looking at each other and further to what you could describe as a planned and/or regular activity.
To me it summons Randy and Gerald in Southpark jacking off with each other in a hotub, naked, right there really
with
each other.
Personally I don't think it's not even in the same league as what they did here, though the same sport.
I just don't know how you could (if you do that is) consider it the way I have previously illustrated. They were 30 feet from each other, closed eyes, more or less in a swimming pool. To me that is just different, and I think it speaks for itself as to why. Actually what comes to my mind in reflecting is that you know your friend masturbates, he knows you masturbate; this is literally one step higher in the fact that they are just in each others presense doing what they both know all along they did. I mean no extenuation, clearly I think they are masturbating together in some form, but not in the form it would seem from the intuitive inference stated here; bringing to circle that I as well don't see a problem with what they did at all. I think people today are guarded, stifled, and inhibited with natural actions, functions, and interactions of life.
To me, my first response in thought is that they were playing a game. That was the heart of the activity. It wasn't perverse, even sexual: they were passing time because they were bored and egging each on with a combination of insults (sisters, mothers, cousins, girlfriends) and also who could provide the best material. It's a game in the sexual arena. Truth or Dare, Spin the Bottle, Skinny Dipping, etc You can take off your clothes, kiss each other at the beckon of a bottle, but there is seemingly some barrier that says "No!", this changes everything. There are people's morals, or rather limitations; nothing more. And not that there's anything wrong with morals, principles, or ideals.
And I'd like to reitterate that I believe and did believe immediately of the motive and intent of Cuaron here: he wanted to convey the extreme boredom these two felt already early in the summer and for me who didn't immediately spring to the sexually salient features I got that and laughed along the way.
My possible Bias (if you would think it that way): I'm not gay, I don't think I'm even bi. And I've never masturbated with another person and I don't think I would. However, I'm certaintly not going to assign any pre-destined decision before I'm even presented with the oppurtunity.
Normality is incredibly weird. -

lol, I don't get it. What I said, in the quotation you quoted from my post makes perfect sense.
In talking about this subject (the context that subject summons) arguably the important thing is the specific context (film scene, culture, background, and atmosphere) in which the subject (the context) is taking place. but
gl with that

I don't think those are the only two choices. I am very tolerant of people having different types of sexuality (I consider myself "straight, but not narrow"), and I'm certainly not puritanical. But I have never done this and would not ever have wanted to do it. It would just be embarrassingnot out of homophobia, but just kind of like I wouldn't hang out with my best friend in the bathroom while he was sitting on the toilet taking a s, you know?
