The final conversation between Tenoch and Julio is heartbreaking for many reasons but one of them is the fact that Tenoch goes into studying economics even though he says earlier on that he wants to be a writer. Just another example of them allowing society's expectations to dictate their lives (the main example being their not talking anymore because of their taboo sexual connection during the threesome with Luisa).
Anyway, just wanted to comment how sad it is that many of us allow norms to dictate our lives. This film definitely got me thinking about my own life and choices. -

Right, this has happened to us all one way or another right? We let the responsibilities and obligations in life take over our dreams. We gradually mold ourselves into the type of people society expects us to be while largely ignoring who we'd rather be or are on the inside.
It's especially highlighted with more artistic pursuits and dreams, much like Tenoch's were. A lot of people who'd rather go down that path are deterred from it because it's not as valued, can't make you as good a living, and is on the whole condescended to as something not to dedicate your life to (as I've experienced and observed anyways). So, I agree it is quite sad that he ended up going the other way, but at the same time we get the feeling he didn't have much of a choice. They both ended up going into more practical, and, "sensible," fields in the end. -

I don't really know if the kiss caused enough of a barrier between them to stop them from communicating after the trip. I really think that it was more because they grew up a lot, they had new responsibilities, and could no longer entertain the idea of constantly being together. It was maturity and the fact that their life simply went in different directions, as it does for many close friends, when adulthood begins looming.
