From what I gathered they were. I remember a couple of seems which seemed to suggest this.
a)When Ana gets angry at them she refers to them wanting to beep each other or something along those lines.
b)Well obviously the threesome scene with Ana was an indicator, it was just so tender and felt right between the two.
c)At the end when Tenoch (or was it Julio) talks about their gay friend who got kicked out of his home he seems to be slightly jealous of his freedom and also really quite sad.
d)Both never really seemed to have a very emotional relationship with their girlfriends (or perhaps they did it was just hidden in the bravado). It seemed to me to be very sexual and what seemed a lot more important was their fraternity "Charlestros"? (excuse my Spanish!)
But then again maybe I'm totally wrong,I'd love to hear what anyone else thinks :)I adored this film and found it just inspiring!

a) thats just because shes angry and says something to insult them
b) you mean the threesome which Ana intiated and where they kissed eachother super awkwardly.. then one of them threw up the next morning remembering what had happened. then them never seeing eachother after the tripl that threesome?
c) i dont remember that scene, ill keep an eye on it next time i watch th film
d) theyre teenagers. simple.
personally i dont buy into the "they were gay" theory. just dont think it is there, nor is it what the films about (to me anyway)
oh also, you could and this one to your list
e) why would julio get so upset after seeing tenoch sleep with ana?? i mean after they take this girl on a roadtrip with the sole purpose of having sex with her? just jealous she choose tenoch, or something more??? hmmm.. -

I have to agree with you. I didn't get any gay vibes between the boys at all. and their kiss was just what it was - kinda awkward. I think they just found the closest mouth nearest each other and it happened to be theirs together when that threesome started happening.
they were totally freaked out in the morning and considering they never talked again. which I find totally sad but thats just the way it went. -

To me the kiss between Tenoch and Julio isn't an indication of homosexuality but, well, more like their awkward way of making peace with each other after banging each other's girlfriends. Because, hey, now they're sharing the same woman, and it's no big deal anymore.

I mean on paper, that sounds reasonable. But in real life would that actually happen? If you slept with your buddy's gf and he slept with yours, would you resolve things by making out with him? I mean I think there was definitely a real sexual tension between the two.

It's complicated. They obviously loved each other a lot, and there may have been a degree of homosexuality or bisexuality, but I dunno about being
in love
we (and they) never got a chance to find out.

Ha! Yeah, right. And you think that kiss is all that happened? Everything in this film is very precisely put together - consider the Luisa reveal at the end and the references to death that are totally woven into the DNA of the movie. So comments like Luisa's "why don't you xxxx each other" or scenes like the boys masturbating together are absolutely not incidental or random. (And look what happens when she raises the notion of a finger up the a***!). Are they flat-out gay? No. Do they have repressed sexual feelings for each other? Yes. Is the director making a point about macho Mexican/frat boy culture and what all that horseplay might conceal? What do you think?

To me saying they are gay is somewhat missing the point. The movie is about growing up, transgressions and loss. I thought those themes were woven beautifully into that scene - then again, I did just see the movie and have not reflected to much about it.

I can see your point about that not what the film is really about. But that's not to say the film can't have other dimensions/elements going on at the same time as its exploration of the meaning of life. For me, if Julio and Tenoch were totally comfortable in their heterosexuality they could have gotten past the kiss and what happened after (considering how close they were as friends and all they went through together on the trip). The fact that they could barely look at each other afterwards shows a very deep-seated shame which as someone else pointed out was probably due to macho-Mexican culture in general.
Another thing I'd like to point out is I didn't make the post to ask whether or not they were gay. I think that can sometimes be a bit superficial. Although I did believe them to be in love, I wouldn't say they were definitely gay. I think falling in love- as seen in this film especially- is not really for labelling or a black and white issue of whether or not they are gay. It seems to me (between Tenoch and Julio) to be more complicated than that. Maybe I'm talking beep so please call me out if I sound ridiculous, but that's what I got from it, haha!

IMO I agree with you and I think that is why they stop hanging out with each other after the trip. Another reason why I don't think they were in love with each other.
