She stood out more, and used character rather than looks to meet people, also she was clearly depressed, in which case you won't exactly care about the lastest fasion accesory or sticking a bra on.
Also she was sexyplain and simple, I loved how she presented herself in this movie, obviously she wasn't very conventionaly attractive. -

I'll sort of echo what everyone else has said. It's all apart of her character. Nicole was wild and eccentric. She marched to the beat of her own drum. She didn't care what people thought and she wasn't worried about conforming to traditional standards of "beauty". I thought her image totally fit her free spirited persona. Yes, Carlos was the pretty boy and the athlete. But the fact that he was so attracted and drawn to her is what I love about this movie. Opposites really do attract. And I'm actually glad they didn't make her all pretty and glamorous. It was refreshing to see the leading lady in a movie not look like a damn supermodel for once. Realistically, I went to high school with more girls who looked unkempt than those who got all dolled up everyday.

It was part of the whole strategy for the character, she had to reflect how messed up she was not only on an emotional level but also make believable through her exterior the portrait of how damaged she was on the inside

Amusing to hear comments about breasts from those who seem to have no experience with the subject.
Kirsten was 18 when this was made and has the absolutely lovely well formed, pert figure of a lady that age.
Absolutely.
