If either Carlos or Nicole died, then it would follow the Hollywood formula that miscegenation or mixed race couples were not meant to be and tragically end. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the "true" ending. So, in a way, the movie is more better in regards to not following the typical model, however, it would have been more emotional, though many won't be happy with it.
While you made the contrast between Carlos and Nicole, I believe Carlos's character is really unrealistic, and looking at his character in terms of the film, it only reinforces the character of Nicole, whose storyline is more resolved than Carlos's.

Well. I love this movie and the ending is just fine with me. But! I think that the original ending (where Carlos gets killed) or if Nicole would have killed herself it would have been more realistic and a better ending in my opinion.

I like the happy ending. It would have pissed me off if they didn't end up together, haha. But I think it's somewhat realistic that Nicole would end up not killing herself because of Carlos, and it would have been retarded if Carlos died just because it would have made the movie sadderit was depressing enough to me. I dunno, maybe I'm weird, but I like happy endings. Life is depressing enough on its own, I at least want things in movies to turn out nice. 🙂

I agree with RavenIsDonkeyKong! I would have been REEEEEEAAAHHHHHLLLLLLYYY upset if Carlos would have died. It wouldn't have made any sense. But, if Nicole had died, I could understand that. I agree with someone who said earlier that she could have killed herself, thinking it was best for Carlos. I'm just happy that ended up together. It was cute!!! i love this movie!

The Ending was happy but if you want it to be sadder then you can just imagine him dying one week after she tells us the last voiceover? 😛

I have to say that yes, come to think of it, the ending does seem somewhat displaced. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's not necessarily the ending as it is that's the problem, but rather that the rest of the movie doesn't set it up properly in terms of emotional catharsism or tone. Overall, the writing wasn't the best I've ever seen, and especially the voice overs (but quite of few of the more lovey-dovey scenes as well) were very awkwardly written, slightly cheesy almost. The rest of the film had such a gritty realism, and the characters were so well rounded and shaped, the story itself held so much resonance in real life but the ending was presented to us in that almost cheesy way that seemed not to match the realism of the bulk of the movie.
I do think they should've ended up together, but I don't think the end voice over or the 'pilot nunez' sequence should've been in there. Maybe end it after "You were so there" in the car.

But really, how is the ending not realistic? I'm sure for ever 20 couples that ends in death or destruction there's a couple that ends in happiness. For every 50 druggies that od or leaves their family there's bound to be at least one that gets past it. I know people who have had a ROUGH life and yet they came out of it and got their life together. You could say the ending is cliche, butit really depends on the point the movie is trying to make. Sometimes happy endings don't fit, and I agree, but I didn't mind this one so much.
Plus, movies can't always be 100% realistic.
Only the shell, the perishable passes away. The spirit is without end. Eternal. Deathless.

I too would've been pissed. I think CB really is a positive story with some turbulence that gives it character, a bad ending would not match the rest. I know it wasn't executed very good but let's put it this way: I wouldn't have liked CB so much if it had a tragic ending, so it really works for me.

because why? Because he's a Hispanic guy who doesn't want to become a mechanic, dope dealer or car thief?
The movie is unrealistic, because both characters are 17 years old and sometimes have the maturity of 40 year olds, sometimes of 17 year olds, but that aside there's nothing hugely inconsistent about the characters.

i think well first wow that class your taking sounds so cool and fun i wish my college had it and second as someone mentioned before me the ending of them not ending up together is very Hollywood, i personally have wasted to much time watching movies were the characters don't end up together and at the end your like what was the point, for example little children they should have run off together, all the pretty horses, the good girl and for once i wish someone would make a version of romeo and Juliet were they live and stay together that would be cool.i know the directors are trying to prove a moral point like with little children but hey its just a movie give us the crazy ending. on a lighter note i really love crazy beautiful and the ending included i gives you hope and it shows you that he saved her its romantic and plus i love Los Angeles especially Santa Monica and they show so much so it reminds me of the good times i had in Los Angeles.

in the commentary the director says that Carlos was supposed to die.

I usually like movies that have depressing or weird endings, but I'm glad this one ended up happy. It showed that a messed up girl really can turn things around and become responsible and Carlos was a good guy so I would hate to see him die in the end.

Nicole is a destructive and rebelious child [] Carlos is [an] organized [] gentlemen and meets Nicole which changes his life and attitude toward his friends and even his mother. He was becoming a rebel just like Nicole
Disagree. He was distracted by his new relationship (who hasn't been there?!), feeling frustrated by a couple of incidents, and had a couple of slips in discipline. Nothing serious at all (and certainly not "just like Nicole").
Nicole on the other hand, once she met Carlos, calmed
                                    w-a-a-a-a-y
down. When her father told him all about her behaviour it came as a shock to him, he had not seen any of that.
So in fact I believe that he always was the steadying influence she always needed, but it took the party / police incident and their running away together to make them both realise it. But having done so they realised "in the cold light of morning" as it were, that they had to face their situation and deal with it. Which they did, blah blah blah, happily ever after, yada yada yada, what's wrong with a happy ending. I liked it.

Great metaphoric observation: "in the cold light of morning"
I didn't pick that up while watching the movie, and it's so true.

I'm in the middle on this one. Carlos dying would have been an awful ending. Nicole killing herself would have also been awful. However, I did feel like the ending was way too sappy. The girl was clearly messed up and not just a spoiled rich girl, she should have been sent to some kind of clinic, maybe not in Utah, but somewhere nearby in Los Angeles where her father and Carlos could have seen her regularly. She did seem like she was determined at the end to be a better person.

(that's almost word for word how she describes it to carlos, on her bed in her room) He mentions that his dad left when he was 5, couldn't cut it in the US so he headed back to Mexico.
